Steve Bamford’s Buick Invitational 2009 Tips

From the desert we move West to the best municipal golf course in the USA, Torrey Pines.  Its home to the Buick Invitational and in June 2008 it also played host to the US Open.  The tournament is played over a mix of the North (a single round) and South (3 rounds) courses, with the tougher South course playing real long. At +7,500yds the South Course is a strict Par 72 and was ranked the 11th toughest course on the PGA Tour in 08.  In its US Open guise (Par 71 and slightly longer) it ranked 3rd toughest. The cut will be E/+1 and a player averaging sub 70 over the 4 rounds will be close to taking the title. Unlike the FBR Open (TPC Scottsdale) last week, this course doesn’t have such punishing rough.  However weather conditions can play a major part, especially the wind off the Pacific.  The attributes I placed into the Golf Betting System predictor, were based around driving length, GIR and strong putts per GIR.

My tips are below:

Camilo Villegas 1pt EW @ 20/1 Stan James. Off colour so far this season, but this course should suit.  Top 10 and Top 20 finishes last season here.

Luke Donald 1pt EW @ 20/1 General. Traditionally performs well at the Buick.  In decent form so far this season with two successive Top 25s.

Rory Sabbatini 1pt EW @ 25-1 Sky Bet. Just starting to find some form, after a significant spell in the wilderness.  Rory likes Torrey Pines.

Ryuji Imada 1pt Top 5 @ 9-1 Paddy Power. With Tiger, he was the only player to go sub double digits in 2008.

Hunter Mahan 1pt Top 5 @ 9-1 Bet Fred. Due success very soon, could be a Torrey Pines this week.

The following players offer great Top 10 value and have decent course form.

Brandt Jobe 1pt Top 10 @ 11-1 Bet 365

Parker Mclachlin 1pt Top 10 @ 10-1 Bet 365

PW's tips:

Car Road Tax Prices

Rory Sabbatini, 1.5 pts e/w 20-1 General. Coming into form, game suits this course and 3rd last year.

Lucas Glover, 4pts top 10 finish 15-2 Bet 365. Finished 2nd on the prediction model behind Sabbatini with most of my combinations. Can't see him winning but top-10 looks good.

Kevin Streelman, 1pt E/W 80-1 General; 33-1 0.5pt EW First Round Leader (Sky Bet). South Course specialist starting on the tougher South Course. Hit 68-69 first round in both starts here last year.
