PW’s HSBC Champions Tips
In golf betting we're always trying to find that killer stat, a hidden trend or the unique piece of insight which gives you an edge over the bookies. The Predictor gives you a great starting point in your quest!
If you're considering a flutter this week then Bet 365 are currently offering a 100% bonus deposit (if you open an account) up to a maximum of an incredible £210 - essentially they'll match the value of your first deposit of between £10 and £200 in free bets. This is an outstanding offer from a top bookmaker:
The HSBC Champions is now the 4th WGC event of the golfing calendar and rightly so. The event's purse of $7m has attracted a stellar field boasting 21 of the top 30 players in the world, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, as well as Major winners YE Yang and Stewart Cink. Alongside the well-known players there's also a smattering of top players from the Japan and Asian Tours - we shouldn't disregard these as Yang's win in 2007 is proof.
To succeed here you need to be on top of your game - all 4 of the previous winners (Garcia, Mickelson, Yang and Howell) came to Shanghai with a win in the last 2 months or so under their belt. You also need to be hitting lots of greens and avoiding mistakes to succeed around here.
With less than 80 players in the mix there is some real value out there in terms of top-10 betting. There's also the small matter of Dubai in a couple of weeks also - 14 of the top 15 players in the Race To Dubai are jostling for position - all adds up to a fascinating tournament!
Anyway, onto my tips. Here's how I used the predictor to get my picks:
1. 'Form horses'
Clear down the predictor by clicking reset, then load up the Last Tournament, Last but 1 and last but 2 tournament, any further back and you're getting into the realms of the playoffs where fewer players will feature. My pick:
Alexander
Noren
2pts Top 10 5/1
Stan James.
Noren fits the
bill excellently here. Won in September at the European
Masters and his current form is outstanding with 2 Top 6
finishes in the last 3 tournaments. Not sure he'll win this
as the opposition is much tougher, however top 10 in a small
field is a great punt. Stan James are offering a free
£25 bet for new accounts and offer the best price on Noren
for a top 10 -

2. Course specialists
Load up HSBC Champions average, top 10s and wins:
Y.E. Yang
1pt
EW 66/1 Ladbrokes.
Yang will have
fond memories of this course - he successfully held off
Tiger Woods back in the 2007 season for what was then his
biggest win. Trumped that at the PGA Championship in August
by once again holding off Tiger....can lightening strike 3
times?! Ladbrokes are offering a free £10 bet for new
accounts and offer the best price on Yang to win -

3. Course setup
You've got to be long here and hit lots of greens - load distance and GIR:
Sergio Garcia
1pt EW 25/1 Bet 365.
It was a toss-up
between Garcia and Rory McIlroy and the Spaniard gets the
call from me. OK, he hasn't won since lifting this trophy
last year, but clearly likes the course and showed some
glimpses of a return to form with the putter at his home
event a couple of weeks back. Bet 365 are offering a
100% deposit bonus for new accounts up to £210 and offer the
best price on Garcia -

4. Overall
Load up all of the above:
Phil Mickelson
2pts
Win 13/1 Paddy Power.
Another previous
winner in Shanghai, plus returned to sensational form at the
Tour Championship to share the limelight with Woods. Is
quite capable of holding off Tiger here and whilst 13/1 is a
little skinny it could still give you a nice return this
week. Paddy Power are offering a free £20 bet when
you open an account and stake just £10 -

5. ...and finally
A couple of tasty outsiders with recent victories who might just surprise....
Daisuke Maruyama
1pt top 10 22/1 Paddy Power.
James Kingston 1pt top 10 16/1 Totesport.
