Steve Bamford's tips for the Quail Hollow Championship:
Quail Hollow Championship Tips After the relative tedium of New Orleans we move onto a truly classical course that could easily host any US Open or PGA Championship, Quail Hollow, North Carolina. A great course attracts the greatest players and it’s no surprise the Tiger Woods starts his first PGA Tour event of 2010 right here this week.
Fact is this course dictates that the very ‘cream of the crop’ ultimately triumphs. 2009 Sean O’Hair was in the Top 3 form players on the planet we he won ahead of so to be crowned US Open Champion Lucas Glover. 2008 saw Anthony Kim win his first PGA Tour tournament with 07 seeing Tiger triumph. Furyk and Singh make up the last 5 Quail Hollow champions.
This course has everything, including length (+7,400 Par 72), trees and water in-play on many holes. Interestingly the greens are fast bent in nature and the course is a Tom Fazio Re-Design. The course make-up is definitely similar to Augusta and also has similarities with Muirfield.
2 things are blatantly obvious this week.
1) Woods, Mickelson and Furyk will be in the mix for victory. Indeed Furyk is an attractive 18/1 as I right this having been nibbled from 20s.
2) Boylesports are setting the pace in terms of best prices currently matching and in most cases leading the market for value. Check them out.
Watney is a major winner and World Top 5 player in the making. Butch Harmon tutors Nick and his game unsurprisingly is built around power bombing. Eats Par 5s for breakfast, but it’s his consistency around Quail that grabs the attention. He’s never been outside of the Top 40 in 5 attempts with 4 Top 25 finishes. 7th at The Masters 3 weeks ago with a closing 65 suggests he can challenge this week. Predictor Model No 5.
The winners list here at Quail Hollow doesn’t contain an Australian, but World Number 14 Ogilvy loves this track. In 6 appearances he’s never missed a cut and has 5 Top 25s including 2 Top 10s. Look at recent tournaments played on classical bent green courses and Ogilvy pops up on plenty of leader boards and offers run for our money this week at 50s. . Predictor Model Top 20 pick.
You could easily form an argument to say that Matt Kuchar is the most improved player on the PGA Tour in 2009. What is striking about previous Quail Hollow results is that in-form players thrive and there is no better example of a form player than Kuchar, who has already amassed 4 Top 10 finishes and currently sits 8th in the Fed Ex Cup. A top Par 5 performer whose fast bent green and Fazio course form catches the eye. Predictor Model No 3 Georgia based Goggin ticks a lot of boxes this week and has caused some differences of opinion across the market makers. You can see why. Totally inconsistent to the point of madness, Goggin shows absolutely nothing then pops up in contention. Finished 4th in Phoenix, but what really attracts is both his nationality and the fact that he grew up on the Tasmanian coast so is well used to seaside golf as proven by his 5th at Turnberry last year.
The talented Nevada based player was quietly ‘touted’ for The Masters 3 weeks ago. Sure enough a final round 68 catapulted him into the Top 15 and many scored a tasty Top 20 market triumph. Winner of his first PGA Tour tournament at the Wyndham Championship in South Carolina in summer 2009, Moore is my momentum pick for this week. Like fast bent greens so can go well.
Campbell fits into “horses for courses” category perfectly. He’s playing solid if not spectacular golf right now but hey that’s why he’s 100-1! Likely to click into contention very soon on and I want to be on him! His Augusta record is first class as is his liking for fast bent greens. Indeed 2009 saw him contend at Augusta, Houston and Las Vegas, where conditions suited his game to a tee.
We’ve kept a close eye on South African Immelman throughout his 2010 rehabilitation and we can report he’s starting to play well again. Quail Hollow favours top players and Immelman was in the World’s Top 10 when Zach Johnson placed the green jacket on his shoulders in 2008. I predicted a Top 20 at Augusta and Trevor delivered and Immelman loves Quail Hollow……
