SB’s Transitions Championship 2009 Tips

Let me open by stating categorically that I’m shunning the Prediction Picks this week.  I’m sure that this will totally backfire, but there are methods to my madness of shunning the system that delivered 3 Top 10 players last week.

The Transitions Championship previously known as the PODS and Chrysler Classic is at the Copperhead course in Tampa Bay, Florida.  It’s a real brute of a place, where scoring is tough and patience is required.  Par on any hole is a decent score here. It’s also completely different to any other course on the Florida swing.  It has major elevation changes, has tight tree lined fairways and small fast and undulating greens.

It’s a real specialist’s course where local knowledge counts and where ball striking, not raw power is the key and my picks reflect this.  It’s also a nightmare to predict the winner of, so I’m going with a ‘team’ of players to bring back some rewards.

My tips are below:

KJ Choi 1.5pts Win @ 22-1 Boylesports

The harder the course, the more likely you’ll see KJ at the top of the leaderboard.  He has won here twice and at the three weeks ago Northern Trust showed signs of returning to his best form.

John Senden 1pt EW @ 55-1 Stan James

Copperhead is ‘Senden Heaven’. For tee to green consistency and ball striking the Australian has few peers.  John has contended for the win, the past 2 seasons at this course and in decent enough nick form wise this season.

Carl Pettersson 1pt EW @ 66-1 General

Remember what I said about local knowledge.  Well the Swedish, log cabin living resident, studied and still lives in North Carolina (bear with me).  Copperhead with its elevations and tree lined fairways plays like a North Carolina course, where Pettersson traditionally excels, just look at his Wyndham win in 2008.  Started the year sluggishly but if he can add a little to his accuracy off the tee, will contend here.

Jonathan Byrd 1pt T10 @ 10-1 Bet 365

I’m sticking with Mr Byrd for a second week.  This is a ball strikers course, where players have to be able to shape both ways.  Byrd sits 5th in ball striking in 2009 showed that slowly he’s turning his form around in Puerto Rico last week.  Performs well here.

Joe Durant 1pt T10 @ 10/1 Bet 365

The Floridian based player, has traditionally performed well at Copperhead.  3 Top 10s in 7 attempts here.  Straight and accurate.  Starting to find some form in 2009.

Troy Matteson 1pt T10 @ 10/1 Bet 365

Tampa Bay local who plays the Copperhead well.  Not in decent form, but wasn’t last year, when he missed 3 cuts prior to placing T2 here.

Kent Jones 1pt T10 @ 18/1 Bet 365

It’s a hunch! Has played well here in the past and his record in North Carolina has always been decent.  A decent value long shot.

PW’s Transitions Championship 2009 Tips

A tough course which could just as easily be hosting a major, being contested without some of the world's biggest players. Par's a great score around here and the more adventurous will be heavily penalised for wayward tee shots. Plodders will prosper around here - It's no surprise to me that Furyk is the clear favourite. Here's what Im laying this week:

John Senden 1pt EW, 55-1 stan James; 4 pts T10 5-1 Bet365. One of the most frustrating players to back if you ever follow the play-by-play on PGAtour.com. Fairway-Green-Putt-Putt might as well be hard-coded against his name. The king of the 2-putts (from under 10 feet typically) can prosper here, as he has done for the last couple of seasons.

Jeff Maggert 0.5pts EW 300-1 Extrabet , 1 pt T10 25-1 Bet365. If I ignore everything else and just look at tee to green and scrambling then Maggert is there every time. Don't put your house on this one, but worth a small punt.

Jim Furyk, 2pts 12-1 Win General. Coming into form, everything about this course and Furyk's game suggest that this could be the week he gets back onto the winning trial.
