 Turnberry has to be Mastered

It's almost upon us!!!  The Royal & Ancient 2009 Open Championship returns to Scotland and returns to the Ailsa Craig course at Turnberry, Ayrshire.  There are so many questions to be answered.  Can the 'links golf'  master of recent times Harrington lift the Claret Jug for the third consecutive time?  Will Woods open his 2009 major account and at the same time secure his 15th major title?  Can Casey, Fisher, McDowell, McIlroy, Poulter or Westwood become the first home nations champion this millennium?

The golfing world is still reeling from the shock of little-known American Lucas Glover's triumph at the US Open. The power of the seismic shockwaves can be seen from the fact that Glover was 225-1 pre event.  Glover showed fortitude to 'close the deal' at Bethpage in June, but the fact is that the victory was dictated totally by the wet conditions which in effect prevented the tournament from being a fair contest.

Furyk can win at Turnberry

Woods Challenger:  Jim Furyk in great form and has bundles of Open Championship experience

Shocks happen at the Open Championship less frequently, but do happen. When Ben Curtis arrived at Royal St Georges in 2003, it was his first ever major championship in his rookie season as a pro. Curtis from Ohio, USA had played only 13 PGA Tour events in his career and had never finished in the Top 10 of a top level tournament.  After an incredibly mature performance Curtis defeated Thomas Bjorn and Vijay Singh by a single shot.  Bookmaker pension schemes were seriously topped up!

When you build a shortlist of likely winners it becomes clear that the Open Championship due to its 'links' course nature is a unique challenge, but we have uncovered a pattern that highlights those most likely to contend and ultimately triumph.

Take the Open Championship winners from 2000 through 2008.

Fact 1 - 7 of the 9 champions (78%) finished in the Top 10 of the preceeding Masters at Augusta.

Fact 2 - These 7 champions ALL had experience of previously finishing in the Top 20 at the Open Championship.
