Dyson is a steal here in my opinion. To qualify for the European Ryder Cup team there are 3 possible routes:
a) The leading 4 players in the Ryder Cup World Points List as of 29th August 2010; this is essentially the World Ranking Points accumulated between 9th September 2009 and then. Dyson is currently 5th after his win at St Andrews in the autumn. Dyson plays a lot of tournaments - 32 in total last season - therefore will have loads of chances to improve on this position. He also qualifies for the US Masters by virtue of his top-50 OWGR status as of today. If he can maintain that status then he'll also make the US Open; then there's the Open Championship for which he's already qualified. Don't forget, he won at St Andrews a few weeks back which is this year's venue. In short, given his current excellent form and opportunity to accumulate World Ranking Points, he has a great chance of qualifying through this route in the first instance.
b) The leading 5 players in the Ryder Cup European Points List as of 29th August 2010 who haven't qualified through route a; this is essentially the total of Euro prize money accumulated between 9th September 2009 and then. Dyson is 4th on this count already, behind Westwood and McIlroy who will likely both qualify through route a. As above, Dyson plays lots of European Tour events and another win or a series of good finishes will put him in a great position.
c) 3 final Captain's Picks from Colin Montgomerie. Dyson has just been selected by the Ryder Cup captain to represent Europe in next week's Royal Trophy in Bangkok. Monty clearly rates him in the format which encompasses Foursomes, Fourballs and Singles. Sound familiar?! A good performance here will put Dyson even higher up in Monty's estimation should he fail through routes a and b. Dyson was also part of the winning Vivendi trophy team in October, his second appearance in that tournament, and is building his status as a world-class player. Number 43 in the world at the time of writing doesn't lie! If Monty's looking for course form then Dyson's T6 at the Wales Open last season proves he can play the course. Oh, he's also in the form of his career with 2 wins and a further 3 top-10s in his last 10 starts. Need I say any more?!
In my view, only a catastrophic dip in form or an injury will prevent Dyson from lining up for Europe in the Autumn. If Dyson notches another win in the next 2 months then expect his price to fall massively. For all of these reasons, I'll also go with these 2 supplementary Dyson bets.
