No Tiger Woods and a misfiring Phil Mickelson gives Team USA a relatively weak look to it. Steve Stricker will be missed and it's abundantly clear that Team Europe has masses more experience in its ranks. Half of the team have only 1 Ryder Cup appearance or are rookies. That looks like an uphill task for Team USA, especially when you note Mickelson's and Furyk's lack of Ryder Cup success in the past. Rickie Fowler and Jim Furyk are the form horses in the American side and it's unsurprising to see Rickie heading up what looks like an uneasy US Top Points Scorer market. Some bookmakers have Fowler as joint-favourite with Phil Mickelson and if backing the market favourite appeals to you it's certainly a difficult choice.
The Matchplay animal that is Hunter Mahan appeals at a price as big as 12/1. He has masses of Ryder Cup and President's Cup experience and the 2012 World Matchplay Champion has a real pedigree in this form of the game, including 3 singles victories from 4 President's Cup matches. However the underdog tag is something that both American and European teams have used to their advantage recently and there is plenty of value in the Top Combined Overall Scorer market across the whole US squad.
With 11 matches behind him Zach Johnson is the third most experienced player for Team USA and his record in 3 losing teams is eye-catching. An overall 6-1-4 (W-H-L) record is decent as is his 55% win percentage. The 2007 Masters Champion has won 2 of his 3 singles matches beating Padraig Harrington (Celtic Manor 2010) and Graeme McDowell (Medinah 2012) into the bargain. Zach was joint-top US scorer in Medinah and looks over-priced in both Overall and US Points Scorer markets.

Hunter Mahan has always been likened to Ian Poulter across the Atlantic and the Californian was second only to the Englishman in Valhalla when he made his Ryder Cup debut. The 2012 Accenture World Matchplay victor impressed again when he almost defended the title in 2013 and it's worth noting that this will be the 32 year old's seventh team appearance across the Ryder/President's Cup. Expect the recent Barclays tournament winner to be a key player for Team USA, making plenty of appearances and he looks like value across both top points scorer markets.
