I don’t mean to worry any readers, but selecting The Masters champion of late has been like picking a needle from a hay stack! Let me give you an example: Take the view that players who are in decent form will contend around the confines of the National course. It makes perfect sense, i.e. players who are happy with their games will have the confidence to contend...

Well the last 3 winners at Augusta hadn’t won a tournament in the previous 18 months prior to slipping on the Green Jacket. Indeed only Zach Johnson, the 07 champion, actually placed inside the Top 10 of a US tournament going into the tournament. Both Angel Cabrera and Trevor Immelman hadn’t finished in the Top 10 prior to their victories. Shocking stuff! However with 2009 providing major winners Cabrera, Glover, Cink and Yang, surely it’s time to see those at the top of the betting price charts winning in 2010? Here are my views around the chances of the big named favourites for The Masters in 2010:

Tiger Woods Tiger Woods Best 6/1 with Ladbrokes. Ladbrokes
Major Wins: 14 Masters History: Win 97, 01, 02, 05 2009 Majors: 6/6/MC/2
Tournament Wins: 71 2010 Form: First tournament of the season
Woods was 2/1 favourite for the title last year.  A best price of 5/1 on Tiger does NOT attract in my opinion.  You can’t win around Augusta having not played competitive golf for months.  Won’t win in my opinion so worth a lay (no pun intended).  Take a look at the Tiger Hunting Promo offered by Victor Chandler where any losing player on the outright winner market will be refunded if they beat Tiger. Check out all the bookmaker special offers here.
Phil Mickelson Phil Mickelson Best 14/1 with Paddy Power. £20 free bets via this link: Paddy Power
Major Wins: 3 Masters History: Win 04, 06 2009 Majors: 5/2/-/73
Tournament Wins: 37 2010 Form: Top 10 at Pebble Beach is only real form.
Mickelson just can’t find his putter in 2010.  Lefty is famous for winning in January and February but has failed to do so this season with the flat stick most at fault.  Amazingly a plethora of bookmakers are pricing Phil shorter to win this week than in 2009 where he had already won 2 tournaments including the WGC CA Championship @ Doral.  NAUGHTY bookies!  Don’t be surprised if he goes close, however.
Ernie Els Ernie Els Best 16/1 with Ladbrokes.  Ladbrokes
Major Wins: 3 Masters History: 2nd 00, 04 2009 Majors: MC/MC/8/6
Tournament Wins: 43 2010 Form: 2 wins already this season at Doral & Bay Hill
The Big Easy is the hottest golfer on the planet right now and his return to form can be tracked back to the last 2 majors of 2009 where he contended for the victory before coming up short.  13/1 seems a fair price and South African players who reside in Florida have a track record of success around Augusta.  If the wind blows hard (and it could) Els will contend.
Padraig Harrington Padraig Harrington Best 20/1 with Ladbrokes.  Ladbrokes
Major Wins: 3 Masters History: 5th 02,08 2009 Majors: 35/MC/65/10
Tournament Wins: 25 2010 Form: 2 top 10s so far this season
You can’t argue with Harrington’s early season form in 2010 which is the complete opposite to last year where his game was in complete tatters.  You get the feeling with Paddy that the Augusta ‘manicured’ set-up offers him the least chance of success of the 4 majors and he hasn’t won a tournament since his PGA Championship victory in 2008.  Contending at the Shell Houston is also a negative for me and I can see an EW place at best for the Dubliner.
Steve Stricker Steve Stricker Best priced 25/1 with Totesport. £60 free bets via this link: Totesport
Major Wins: 0 Masters History: 6th in 2009 2009 Majors: 6/23/52/MC
Tournament Wins: 8 2010 Form: Won the Northern Trust at Riviera, plus 2 more top 10s
Steve Stricker World Number 2….has a strange ring about it.  Fact is the Wisconsin native has upped his game throughout 2009 and early 2010 and is now one of the most potent and consistent players in world golf.  Plays tough and classical golf courses well but his major record does not tally with that of a World Number 2.  Geography and his lack of driving length mean for me there is better value down the favourite pecking order.
Lee Westwood Lee Westwood Best 20/1 with Paddy Power. £20 free bets via this link: Paddy Power
Major Wins: 0 Masters History: 6th in 1999 2009 Majors: 43,23,3,3
Tournament Wins: 31 2010 Form: 4 top 10s across the PGA and European Tour
You just get the feeling with Lee that he’s starting to find belief.  Firstly a true belief that he can compete in the US and that he is a World Top 5 player.   Whether that’s enough to contend this week, only time will tell?  I genuinely believe that Westwood went for the win in Houston and that will scupper his chances at what is clearly his least favoured major track.  I’d like to be wrong but factually I can’t see Westwood winning this week.
Retief Goosen Retief Goosen Best priced 25/1 with Bet Fred. £50 free bets via this link: Betfred
Major Wins: 2 Masters History: 2nd 02, 07 2009 Majors: MC/16/5/51
Tournament Wins: 43 2010 Form: 6 Top 10s already this season in total, no wins
Everything points towards Goosen having a major say this week in Augusta.  6 Top 10s so far in 2010 say everything you need to know about his game right now.  The Goose’s game was taylor-made for the National Course and his record here is second to none. However as we know current form often counts for nought here and the Florida resident has made a habit of not converting a plethora of contention challenges.
Paul Casey Paul Casey Best 28/1 with Bet365. £210 free bets via this link: Bet365
Major Wins: 0 Masters History: 6th in 2004 2009 Majors: 10/MC/47/-
Tournament Wins: 11 2010 Form: 5 top 10s across both Tours this season to date
Think what you will about Casey’s injury in Houston last week.  Casey has learnt from last year that you need to be rested to play your best golf in Augusta so a tweaked shoulder and tight muscle sounds to me like a tactical masterpiece.  Casey has the biggest chance of the English players this week and the current price seems decent value for the US domiciled Brit.  If the wind gets up expect Casey to go close.
