Angel Cabrera: 150-1 pre-event outsider wins 2009 Masters
Let's face facts, it is always easy to be wise after the event, but let's take a closer look at Angel Cabrera. US Open Champion in 2007, where he also finished runner up in the World Matchplay at Wentworth. 38 professional victories including the 2005 BMW Championship on the European Tour. He also has decent Augusta form with 3 T10s in 9 appearances prior to 2009. A decent resume. On the negative side his 2008 form was dismal and his early 2009 form hadn't been much better, although he showed glimpses of recovery with T13 at the Northern Trust. He missed the cut at Houston, but that simply backs the fact that the Shell Houston Open has no real bearing on The Masters whatsoever.
In reality Cabrera pre-event could only be classifed as a very decent long shot and the odds available were if anything slightly generous. However when it became evident that the Argentine was in-form and in contention, Cabrera was always going to be around until the last knockings of the tournament.
Kentuckian Kenny Perry should have been the 2009 Masters champion. After a 7 iron approach to within 2 feet at the 16th, World Number 11 Perry had a comfortable 2 shot lead. However like Tiger an hour earlier, Perry self-destructed on the closing 2 holes, bogeying the pair. Cabrera calmly sank a tricky 5 foot par putt on the final green to join the play off with Chad Campbell and Perry. Campbell who had doggedly stayed in contention throughout the tournament, dropped out with a bogey at the first play off hole and Perry then capitulated with a poor iron approach into the next green. Cabrera calmly made par and was Champion!
