Inside Track: Verizon Heritage

Back to normal this week following The Masters, Harbour Town Golf Links hosts the Heritage for the 41st time in its history. The course on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina boasts an impressive series of previous winners, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin and, more recently, Davis Love III who's won this an incredible 5 times.

Course Essentials - 6,937 Yards, par 71. 3 Par 5s and a reachable par-4 9th.

Course Difficulty - Ranked 23rd of 54 on tour in 2008

Hardest Hole –  Par 3 14th which played 0.2 over par in 2008; historically it's been the 2nd which, when playing as a par 4, played around 0.5 over par.

Easiest Holes - 2nd and 5th, both relatively short par 5s by today's standards at 502 and 530 yards respectively.

Course Set-up – The course is without doubt a shot-maker's course, however 9 of the 14 driving holes do favour a draw from a right-handed player, including 2 of the par-5s. Lots of traps for any wayward shots, however the greens, whilst small, are relatively flat and will yield a lot of birdies to an average putter who can put the ball within scoring range. Someone regularly hitting 300 yard drives in play will be reaching for a wedge rather than a long iron on half of the driving holes - accuracy from 140-in is paramount if you're good enough to keep it in play.

Winning Score – Typically somewhere around 270 (-14) is good enough to win.

Player Attributes- Shot shaping and birdie making required to compensate for the inevitable bogeys around here.

Past Winners In Field -   Davis Love III (5 times); Boo Weekley, Stewart Cink (twice); Aaron Baddeley, Justin Leonard, Jose Coceres, Peter Lonard, Glen Day, Bob Tway (once)
