Paul Williams' tips for the 2010 BMW Italian Open
Turin is the next stop on our European rollercoaster and, with the sport's Elite congregating on TPC Sawgrass, this is a great opportunity for somebody to notch a well-needed win with some of the bigger names out of the equation. This is our second successive visit to the Royal Park Golf Club so last year's stats are, for once, valid in terms of course form.
Last week we missed out on a 100/1 winner with James Morrison spooning his approach into the water in the playoff. Still, the EW payout wasn't to be sniffed at, plus we got 2 out of 3 in our top 20 picks. Let's beat that this week! This week's Top 20 tips are here: BMW Italian Open Top 20 Tips
I've given particular weighting to the Madeira Islands Open which was played in similar company, plus last week and last year's results. In addition, my view is that length is going to be an asset around here with a some putts per round and sand saves thrown in for good measure. My tips:
Raphael Jacquelin 1pt EW @ 40/1 Bet 365. RESULT: Missed Cut
Jacquelin needs to win to finally remove the beard that he's been sporting for far too long - this is a great opportunity for him to do just that. Just a shot outside the playoff last week was very encouraging, plus 2nd place here last year give significant hope for him to be reaching for the razor come Sunday evening...
James Morrison 1pt EW @ 35/1 Bet 365. RESULT: Missed Cut
Morrison is young enough and hungry enough to dust himself down from last week's playoff defeat and get back in the mix here. Clearly his price is now much shorter, however that's to be expected. His form and short game is as good as anyone here and can certainly get close again and repeat his win in Madeira.
Nicolas Colsaerts 1pt EW @ 60/1 Coral. RESULT: T3
The 27 year old Belgian is finding some real form at present and it's time for us to jump on board. Was in contention right up until the last few holes last week, finally finishing a shot outside the EW positions; this was on the back of another quality top-10 finish in China. Drives the ball a long, long way and is hitting lots of greens - if he putts well this week then watch out!
Alejandro Canizares 1pt EW @ 40/1 Bet 365. RESULT: T10
Canizares had a putt to put himself in the playoff last week - he's getting closer and closer. His all-round game is improving rapidly and he will win soon, of that I have no doubt.
Pelle Edberg 1pt top 10 @ 13/1 Stan James. RESULT: T29
Pelle Edberg 0.5pts EW First Round Leader @ 125/1 Stan James. RESULT: T9
Edberg is desperate to get his playing privileges back having lost his card last year - the fact he qualifies to play here as a finisher between 121st-153rd on last year's Race To Dubai shows how shallow the field is. To be fair, he's playing some neat golf at present with 4 top 20s from his 5 starts on the main Tour. I'm not sure he's got quite enough to finish in the money but could get close enough for a top 10 payout and often starts quickly.
