Paul Williams' tips for the 2010 Ballantine's Championship:
After a tough run of tournaments on either new courses or completely new events, we are finally returning to a tournament with some history - albeit only 2 events but something to work with nevertheless. Graeme McDowell won in 2008 with a score of -24; Thongchai Jaidee won in 2009 with a score of -4. None of the top 10 in 2008 repeated the feat in 2009 as the conditions were dramatically different. If the early weather forecast is anything to go by then Thursday will be wet and VERY windy - in fact, without over-dramatising things, if the forecast is correct then I'd be surprised to see a full day of play on Thursday and those out early could be at a severe disadvantage if they do play on time.
I've looked at Thursday to Sunday of last season's tournament to see who could handle the course in testing conditions and have based my tips on these players accordingly. Fair-weather players will struggle badly and only those with the ability to scrape par with a great short game need apply. My tips:
Jaidee will be looking to overshadow local boy and playing partner YE Yang with his afternoon tee-time on Thursday. Back from a minor injury sustained in Augusta and will fancy his chances of retaining his trophy here. 4 top 10s on the European Tour this year (if you include the quarter final exit in the WGC Match Play) and clearly playing some great stuff.
The Irishman's first round of 70 under easy conditions last year let him down - his final round 66 was immaculate when it was far, far tougher. 3 top 10s already this season and can improve on that here in my view. Teeing off later on Thursday also.
Kang proved he could handle conditions when finally losing out to Jaidee in the playoff last year - 125/1 is far too long and worth a dabble. Another afternoon starter with a great chance.
I'm a growing fan of Knutzon and he's obliged for me already this season so I'm sticking with him here. Has finished in the top 10 in his last 2 outings on Tour and still isn't on the bookies' radar. Out last of all Thursday PM - the first round leader punt is also a very attractive price.
