Steve Bamford Course Notes - Muirfield Village Golf Club

I call Muirfield Village the ‘Cathedral of Ball Striking.’ A look at the champions list featuring Tiger Woods (5 times), Kenny Perry (3 times), Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Dufner, Hideki Matsuyama, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay tells you all you need to know.

Top-level ball striking is a prerequisite of winning around Jack Nicklaus’ most famous golf course design. But you’d expect nothing different from the design brain of the 18-time Major Championship winner. Set 5 miles north-west of central Columbus, Ohio this parkland, classical golf course plays as a 7,392 yard, Par 72. Not overly long, this course features the typical Nicklaus design trait of getting more difficult the closer to the hole the player gets.

The course features tree-lined fairways, 73 bunkers, 11 holes with water in play and over 80 acres of primarily Kentucky bluegrass rough. Green complexes are undulating and small at 5,000 sq.ft average featuring Bentgrass with Poa Annua. Trouble around the greens is plentiful. The key to Jack’s Place is the ability to regularly get approach shots close to pin locations which unlocks scoring opportunities.
