Paul Williams Course Notes

TPC Southwind is located just 20 minutes drive east from FedEx’s main global hub in Memphis, Tennessee.

It’s a relatively tough track which traditionally has been one of the hardest non-Major par 70s on the PGA Tour. But it’s not only the course that’s difficult as sweltering temperatures in Memphis, allied to high humidity, traditionally turns this tournament into a real grind. Bermuda rough at 2.5″ doesn’t help the scoring and Southwind also features 8 par-4s of over 450 yards, plus of course only 2 par-5s to take advantage of.

Green complexes aren’t huge and feature grainy Champion Bermudagrass which isn’t to every player’s taste. You can also say the same about the Zoysiagrass fairways which many say promote flyers. Continually watered greens in 2019 eased the task though for the world’s elite players – expect the same in 2020.

Please note: these stats relate to last year’s WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational and, prior to that, the FedEx St Jude Classic.
