Check out our First Round Leader form stats, history stats and tee times here.

The First Round Leader (FRL) market is fascinating given there are many ways to review the data to hand.

How does the weather forecast impact conditions? Will it be softer earlier, firmer later, windier for some, warmer for others? What tee times have the recent FRL winners had? Have the recent FRL winners started well in this event in the past? Have the recent FRL winners started well in their recent events; have they even been playing well in recent events?

Lots of questions and the odd red herring along the way I’m sure, however I think there are a few factors to consider which might help point us in the right direction.

The latest weather forecast for Shinnecock Hills is here.

The wind will be the main talking point on Thursday and there’s potential for disruption and carnage in equal measure. 10mph winds quickly rise to 20mph as the morning progresses, with the potential for stronger gusts too – and that’s before we reach the peak. In the afternoon we could see gusts in the 40mph range, which on an exposed course like this will either make it brutally difficult or simply unplayable if balls start oscillating on the greens.

First up some history, and going back to 2011 the morning wave has produced 14 of the 22 players who either led or co-led after day 1 in this event. That includes last year when eventual winner J.J. Spaun got off to a flying start from a 7.07am tee time, opening with a round of 66 to lead by one from Thriston Lawrence who also teed off in the morning wave.

The 2018 US Open held here at Shinnecock Hills was mixed in that four players tied for the lead after opening rounds of 69, with afternoon starters Dustin Johnson and Russell Henley matching the scores recorded by Scott Piercy and Ian Poulter from earlier in the day:

  • Scott Piercy: 6.45am
  • Ian Poulter: 7.51am
  • Russell Henley: 12.52pm
  • Dustin Johnson: 1.47pm

Of the four men, only Dustin Johnson had shown any significant first round form in the lead up to the 2018 US Open, having led after day 1 at The Players Championship a month before. The only common ground between three of the four men is that Piercy, Poulter and DJ had all won an event earlier that season so confidence would likely have been high.

The dilemma this week is clear – if (and it’s a big if) play continues to completion on Thursday then the early starters are likely to have slightly more playable conditions, although that’s all relative on a tough course like Shinnecock in the wind. If there’s any kind of significant delay which pushes part of the first round into Friday then the later starters could get a break. In truth, it’s a real guessing game and punters should be cautious with their bets in this market.

My First Round Leader selections are as follows:

J.J. Spaun 1pt EW 60/1 (7EW, 1/5) with BetMGM

  • US Open Starts: 2
  • US Open FRL Best: 1st (2025)
  • US Open FRL Top-7s: 1
  • Last 8 Event FRL Form:  31/40/27/37/20/34/1/1
  • Tee Time: 8.14am

Last year’s US Open champion J.J Spaun sticks out like a sore thumb on this week’s FRL stats page and his 8.14am tee time gives us a little optimism that he can get his title defence off to a strong start.

The American’s triumph last year at Oakmont was fuelled by an opening round of 66 from an early Thursday tee time which gave him the overnight lead and he didn’t end a round outside of the top 2 from there on in. Whether he can repeat the overall feat again is debatable, however a fast start isn’t out of the question given what we’ve seen of him recently.

We often see players produce clumps of FRL form and Spaun backed up his opening round of 64 at Colonial at the end of May with another first round lead the following week at Muirfield Village to make it 4 FRLs in his last 32 starts on the PGA Tour, with 66 at last year’s Players Championship completing the picture.

His Texas Open win in April ticks the season-long winner box that I mentioned in the preamble and he’s more equipped than many others to play in the wind.

Maverick McNealy 1pt EW 66/1 (7EW, 1/5) with BetMGM

  • US Open Starts: 3
  • US Open FRL Best: 61st (2017)
  • US Open FRL Top-7s: 0
  • Last 8 Event FRL Form: 1/8/65/70/27/68/15/13
  • Tee Time: 8.03am

Given Maverick McNealy’s indifferent US Open record of MC/MC/37, a certain leap of faith will be required for this bet, but hear me out.

As one of the better wind players on the PGA Tour, the American’s game is very much centred on his performance on and around the greens, something that could well be accentuated in battling conditions on Thursday. 17th for SG Around the Green and 12th for SG Putting puts that into numbers and if he’s going to make an early impression at Shinnecock Hills then both aspects will likely need to be on top form.

Whilst his US Open record is poor, there’s evidence to suggest that he’s comfortable in the mix in elite company. 10th after day 1 at last year’s Open Championship, Maverick co-led into the weekend at last month’s US PGA Championship before eventually finishing 18th. An opening 67 at this year’s Players Championship also saw the 30 year-old tie for the first round lead at TPC Sawgrass and he was playing well the last time we saw him too, sitting 7th after 54 holes at the Memorial. Whether an 8.03 tee time gives him any advantage when it all washes through remains to be seen, however I’ll take the chance that he gets off to a quick start regardless.
