Check out our First Round Leader form stats, history stats and tee times here.

The First Round Leader (FRL) market is fascinating given there are many ways to review the data to hand.

How does the weather forecast impact conditions? Will it be softer earlier, firmer later, windier for some, warmer for others? What tee times have the recent FRL winners had? Have the recent FRL winners started well in this event in the past? Have the recent FRL winners started well in their recent events; have they even been playing well in recent events?

Lots of questions and the odd red herring along the way I’m sure, however I think there are a few factors to consider which might help point us in the right direction.

First up the weather: The latest weather forecast for Valhalla is here.

Thursday looks set fair for the whole day at Valhalla, with long sunny spells and temperatures reaching the high 70s Fahrenheit later in the afternoon. Winds are light throughout the day although at their lightest first thing, so the key question is whether the higher temperatures later in the day will offset, or more than offset, the advantage of first use of the greens.

Looking at recent US PGA Championship history, going back to 2011 the morning wave has produced 12 of the 18 players who either led or co-led after day 1 in this event, with Bryson DeChambeau’s sparkling round of 66 last year the latest addition to that statistic from a 9:06 tee time.

The exceptions to the rule were Adam Scott who matched Jim Furyk’s 65 from a 13:45 tee time in 2013; Ryan Palmer who also shot 65 the year after to co-lead with Kevin Chappell and Lee Westwood; Kevin Kisner who equalled Thorbjorn Olesen’s early 67 in 2017 at Quail Hollow from a 13:55 tee time; Gary Woodland who broke our hearts in 2018 from a 13:26 tee time to pip Rickie Fowler by shooting 64; Brendon Todd who equalled Jason Day’s early round of 65 in 2020; and finally Corey Conners who took the solo lead 3 years ago from a 13:03 tee time with an opening round of 67.

With the exception of the aforementioned Ryan Palmer, all first round leaders since 2011 had shown some snippets of form in the very recent past. 6 of Woodland’s previous 8 rounds had been in the 60s prior to shooting 64 in the first round at Bellerive in 2018. In 2017 Kisner was 3rd after the first round in Ohio and Olesen had finished 10th overall courtesy of a 67/75 weekend.

Jimmy Walker, who led from wire-to-wire in 2016 to capture his maiden Major title, had also started brightly at the Bridgestone and sat 2nd after 18 holes whereas Dustin Johnson, who led the US PGA on his own in 2015 after a first round 66, had also produced some good opening form at Akron where he was 2nd going into the weekend.

More recently, Brooks Koepka’s opening 63 in 2019 followed on from having finished 1st and 4th after day one in his previous 3 starts, whereas Day (15th) and Todd (2nd) had both started brightly at St Jude the week before arriving at TPC Harding Park in 2020. 2021’s first round leader Corey Conners had finished 8th at The Masters, 7th at The PLAYERS and had been FRL at the Arnold Palmer Invitational before that, so was clearly playing nicely. Rory’s fast-finishing 2nd at Augusta, followed by 5th at Quail Hollow, also fits the narrative perfectly ahead of his fast start at Southern Hills, and Bryson DeChambeau had shot a second round 63 at LIV Tulsa the week before his first round effort 12 months ago.

Essentially then a spark of life in the very recent past seems to be a good pointer for this.

So, PGA Championship history errs on the side of early starters, however we also have 2014 to look a little deeper into which was held here at Valhalla. There were 3 players tied for the lead after day 1 were as follows:

  • Lee Westwood (66): 8:15am
  • Kevin Chappell (66): 8:20am
  • Ryan Palmer (66): 12:40pm

A 2:1 split in favour of morning to afternoon tee times is the same ratio that we’ve experienced in the PGA Championship overall since 2011, however with a pretty flat forecast and warmer conditions in the afternoon I’ll chance a player from both sides of the draw this week.

My selections for First Round Leader are as follows:

Bryson DeChambeau 2pts EW 33/1 (7EW, 1/5) with Star Sports

  • US PGA Starts: 6
  • US PGA FRL Best: 1st (2023)
  • US PGA FRL Top-5s: 1
  • Last 6 (Solo) Event FRL Form: 3/9/20/1/16/47
  • Tee Time: 8.59 AM

Of the more fancied players here at Valhalla, Bryson DeChambeau makes most appeal when it comes to the fastest of starts.

The 30 year-old’s raw power is a strong fit for the course this week and it’s no surprise to me that Steve Bamford has backed him in his outright market preview, however there’s enough evidence to suggest that if he is to seriously contend then it’s likely to come from a very positive opening round.

6 times the Californian has led after the first 18 holes, giving him a strike rate of just over 1 in 30, making the odds on offer very fair this week for him to achieve the feat a 7th time. What’s interesting though is that 3 of those 6 occasions have been at Major Championships, including at last year’s PGA Championship and this year’s Masters. For completeness, the third was at the 2019 Masters.

Winding back to Augusta last month, Bryson was presented with a soft course under windless skies when play began following Thursday’s delayed start and it could be a case of deja-vu here at Valhalla with pre-event rain softening the course ahead of a clam and sunny opening day.

66 from an early tee time last year at Oak Hill was good enough for a 1-stroke lead after day one and an 8.59 AM tee time is perfect for a repeat performance.

Alexander Noren 1pt EW 80/1 (7EW, 1/5) with Star Sports

  • US PGA Starts: 11
  • US PGA FRL Best: 2nd (2012)
  • US PGA FRL Top-5s: 1
  • Last 6 (Solo) Event FRL Form: 54/35/80/47/2/2
  • Tee Time: 1:13 PM

Like overall form, some players produce clumps of FRL form before going off the boil and Alex Noren may well be in the middle of fast-starting purple patch right now that we can benefit from.

We don’t have to go too far back to find the Swede’s last spell of impressive first round efforts – November through January in fact. The Bermuda Championship, RSM Classic, Sony Open and American Express saw the 41 year-old shoot opening rounds of 61, 65, 66 and 62 to record 2 FRLs and 2 further FRL top 7s in the space of 4 starts.

64 to open at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson the week before last and 67 at Quail Hollow saw Noren sit in 2nd place on both events after the opening 18, so him producing another low round to kick off his PGA Championship campaign isn’t out of the question.

13 career FRLs puts his conversion rate on a par with DeChambeau’s above, the most prominent of which was the 2019 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. 2nd after day 1 at the 2012 PGA Championship is his best Major first round effort, and given his ability to hit the ground running of late something similar this week could well be on the cards.
