Now whilst the principle of Each Way Extra is the same across both sports in that you, the punter, can choose the number of each-way places that suits you best, the actual execution of the offer differs between horse racing and golf.
In racing, as you flex the number of each-way places, the odds offered on each horse can vary quite dramatically but the each-way denominator remains the same. This means that if the main market is 4 places, 1/5 odds for instance then increasing to 5 places through Each Way Extra will see the 1/5 odds terms remain, however the odds on offer will drop a little.
Some races offer 1/4 odds instead of 1/5 in the main market and the rule applies for those instances too, with the 1/4 odds terms remaining but the odds changing to suit the chosen number of each-way places being chosen.
On golf, it works a little differently.
The regular market on golf for most full-field events is 5 places, 1/4 odds and the odds you’ll see listed on comparison sites will generally tend to be from that market. Each Way Extra then offers different each-way terms at different odds, but as of January 2024 all with a 1/5 denominator. So, for instance:
- Option 1: 3 places, 1/5 odds. The odds will generally increase over the regular market for this option.
- Option 2: 8 places, 1/5 odds. The odds will generally be similar or slightly lower compared to the regular market for this option.
- Option 3: 10 places, 1/5 odds. The odds will generally be slightly lower compared to the 8 places option.
- Option 4: 12 places, 1/5 odds. The odds will generally be slightly lower compared to the 19 places option.
Of course this can and does vary with some tournaments, for instance bet365 tend to offer more generous terms as standard at the Major Championships such as The Masters and the Open Championship.
In addition, shorter field events with no cut such as the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship may attract different options; however for regular events on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, the examples above are fairly common.
Of course, which option you choose on both horse racing and golf is entirely up to your style of betting. With reductions for ties commonplace in golf, there’s certainly a case to be made for selecting the 10- or 12-place options and maximising your chance of a return, particularly when backing longshots.
