With the Asian Swing behind us now, the DP World Tour heads to mainland Europe for the first time in 2026 with the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship kicking off the European Swing.

Angel Ayora heads the betting once again this week at around 14/1 as he continues his search for a maiden DP World Tour title, with Jayden Schaper his nearest challenger for favouritism at around 18/1. Hennie du Plessis and Eugenio Chacarra follow in the betting in a similar looking market to last week, with the exception of David Puig and Tom McKibbin who return to the LIV circuit.

Course Overview. The new El Prat course sits about 20km outside of Barcelona and was built following the expansion of Barcelona airport which ran adjacent to the old course of the same name. This relocation gave designer Greg Norman a blank canvas and a huge acreage to work upon – the result is a stunning 45-hole complex fit for an event such as this.

Historical events that pre-date 2003 can be disregarded – not that any of this week’s field were involved in those – instead the Challenge Tour’s Peugeot Challenge in 2025 & 2026, plus the European Tour’s Spanish Open in 2011 and 2015 are the relevant leaderboards to study, although the routing and holes used have partially changed for this week’s event.

The Spanish Opens at El Prat were played on a bespoke “Open Course” routing combining the Abajo and Arriba nines, stretching beyond 7,300 yards in total. This week’s Catalunya Championship switches to a different composite, centred on the Pink Course (Arriba & Bosque) nines, removing the longer Abajo nine and reducing total yardage to a quoted 7,057 yards.

As usual with Greg Norman designs, the focus is on playability and is this layout is likely to play tough but fair. Norman tends to punish wayward drives and approaches with well-placed bunkers, however those finding the right areas of the fairways and greens will find birdies available on the undulating bentgrass surfaces. The front 9 is tree-lined and relatively tight, however the back 9 is much more open and the par-5 18th is there to provide excitement right down to the last.

The Par 5s aren’t excessively long at between 540 and 593 yards and should be just about reachable for the bombers who can hit the fairways off the tee, and with six sub-400 yard Par 4s this may come down to who fares best with the wedge in hand.

Predictor Model. Our published Predictor Model is available here. As always you can build your own model using the variables available.

El Prat Course Winners: 2015: James Morrison (-10); 2011: Thomas Aiken (-10); 2006: David Drysdale (-10); 2005: Tomas Jesus Munoz (-1).

Weather Forecast. The latest weather forecast for the Barcelona region is here.

A pleasant four days is in store for the players this week with sunny spells and light winds for the first three days, allowing temperatures to nudge towards 70 Fahrenheit. Sunday may be a little breezier at 15-20mph, although that forecast may well change this far out.

Tournament Trends & Key Factors. We have some basic skill stats from the two most recent events held at El Prat over the years as follows:

  • 2015: James Morrison. 302 yards (40th), 73.8% fairways (7th), 75.9% greens in regulation (5th), 61.5% scrambling (17th), 1.73 putts per GIR (12th)
  • 2011: Thomas Aiken. 303 yards (4th), 50% fairways (59th), 70.8% greens in regulation (16th), 71.4% scrambling (2nd), 1.75 putts per GIR (16th)

Not withstanding the change in routing and holes used this year, a sound tee-to-green game seems preferable here. However strong Scrambling is the most common statistic among the winners here and those who contended on each of the events where stats were recorded.

Incoming Form: Of the four winners here at the new El Prat over the years, their incoming form was as follows:

  • 2015: James Morrison: MC/MC/MC/45/MC/70/MC/18
  • 2011: Thomas Aiken: 3/MC/13/6/7/13/36/35
  • 2006: David Drysdale: MC/MC/36/9/MC/MC/MC/76
  • 2005: Tomas Jesus Munoz: MC/MC/MC/MC/MC/36/MC/MC

James Morrison’s form had been generally poor, but a tie for 18th on his last start at the China Open showed a little promise. Overall the incoming form of the winners here at El Prat has been patchy.

Course Form. To complete the circle, here’s the course form of our winners here at El Prat prior to their victories:

  • 2015: James Morrison: 36
  • 2011: Thomas Aiken: Debut
  • 2006: David Drysdale: Debut
  • 2005: Tomas Jesus Munoz: Debut

A sound tee-to-green game seems to be the most logical starting point with the reward for finding fairways likely to be an unobstructed route to the pin and, on the longer holes, the chance to attack the greens in two shots.

My selections are as follows:

Eugenio Chacarra 2pts EW 20/1 (8EW, 1/5) with BetFred

With another week of patchy stats and significant unknowns to contend with on the DP World Tour, I’m keeping things simple with just three bets this week and the same headline selection as last week, Eugenio Chacarra.

I’ve been guilty more than once this season of giving up on a player too quickly, only to see them content and/or win on the their following start, and Chacarra’s tie for 18th last week was an improvement on 33rd the week before in China and may just set him up nicely to attack this week’s event on home soil.

The 26 year-old finished runner-up when defending his Indian Open title at the end of March before finishing 9th at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Tulum Championship prior to heading east, and his overall form isn’t dissimilar to that of last year ahead of his breakthrough success. The incentive is different now though with 18th on the Race to Dubai an excellent springboard to attack the late spring and summer tournaments as he bids to gain a PGA Tour card for next year.

The Spaniard’s long game was excellent in that aforementioned Indian effort, ranking 3rd for SG Approach and 4th for SG Tee to Green, however it was his putting that took a leap forward last week in Turkey as Eugenio recorded his first top-10 SG Putting performance since last June.

Sparse course form combined with vociferous Spanish support could help Chacarra’s cause this week in an event that’s on the weaker side compared to last week.

Guido Migliozzi 1.5pts EW 35/1 (8EW, 1/5) with bet365

We’ve struck before with Guido Migliozzi when he’s shown progressive form and improving key metrics, and this looks like the perfect time to get on board once again.

The Italian has won four times on Tour now, most recently at the 2024 KLM Open when carrying our money, with my rationale centring on an improvement in both form and long game statistics in the run-up to that event, and we’ve got the potential for another perfect storm here this week in Spain.

Having suffered a poor run of results following his top-5 finish in France last September, Guido’s form took a significant step forward at the China Open following a two-month break, finishing 13th overall largely due to a pair of 66s on the Friday and Saturday. Last week in Turkey was the real eye-opener though, finishing 2nd on a tricky test and importantly topping the SG Approach category whilst ranking 6th for SG Tee to Green. Guido produced almost identical rankings at the 2024 Soudal Open, 2 starts before winning that aforementioned trophy in the Netherlands, and the last time he topped SG Approach was at Wentworth last year – that effort preceded his 5th place finish in Paris.

This week’s shorter, hybrid course should encourage players who are at the peak of their approach play powers, and the eye test for large parts of last week would seem to back up the argument for Guido in that respect here in Barcelona.

Bernd Wiesberger 1.5pts EW 35/1 (8EW, 1/5) with BetFred

Finally, I’m taking the view that rather than dining out on his first win in five years the week before last, Bernd Wiesberger will be motivated to make it a quick-fire double and put himself in a great position to take one of the ten PGA Tour cards on offer for next season.

We’ve already seen Jayden Schaper, Patrick Reed and Casey Jarvis win twice in quick succession this season to put themselves on the verge of playing State-side golf in 2027, and Bernd has previous when it comes to rattling off victories, winning twice in 2012 and three times in 2019. Put simply, when he finds top gear he can stay there, particularly at this kind of level.

Although we’re guessing to a degree how the fusion of nines will play this week in comparison to the routing used for the 2011 and 2015 Spanish Opens, some of the holes are identical and the successful approach of hitting greens and scrambling well when that’s not possible may well come to the fore once again this week. The Austrian has always been one of the better iron-play merchants over the years, and 2nd when victorious in China and 6th last week in Turkey for GIR over his past two starts would suggest he’s at the peak of his abilities once again. 1st for both Scrambling and SG Around the Green in Shanghai suggests the short game is good enough to tackle this layout, and he’s one of a small number with experience around these parts having sat in 10th place here at El Prat heading into Sunday back in 2011.
