The Tour moves to Northern Ireland this week and back to Galgorm Castle, which hosted last year’s renewal plus the 2020 Irish Open, for a mixed men’s and women’s event under the guise of the ISPS Handa World Invitational. With nigh on 300 players in attendance in total, a second course is also being used for the first 2 days, namely Massereene Golf Club which sits a few miles to the south on the banks of Lough Neagh.

Similar to the Vic Open format rather than the Scandinavian Mixed, men and women will play on the same course(s) at the same time for the same prize money but with separate leaderboards, therefore there’s a full men’s and women’s betting market available this week.

The cut rules are slightly different to normal this week, with the regular Friday night cut falling at 60 players and ties for both the men and the women; there will be a further cut on Saturday night to 35 players and ties for both. In both instances, Galgorm only will host the weekend’s action.

Focussing on the men’s tournament, the Monday removal of Andy Sullivan from the field has left Jordan Smith as the clear favourite for this week’s event at a best-priced 12/1. John Catlin (18/1) and Johannes Veerman (20/1) follow, with the likes of Richard Mansell, Ewen Ferguson and Connor Syme all sub-25/1 in what is a weak field, even by DP World Tour standards.

Course Overview: Listed as a 7,151 par 70, Galgorm features just 2 par-5s – both on the back 9 – and two short par-4s within the first 4 holes. Greens are excellent quality and annually overseeded with Creeping Bentgrass to help keep them smooth and true. Massereene is a shorter track at around 6,600 yards and offers better scoring opportunities to the professionals on the days that it’s used.

To give us more of an idea of what to expect in terms of scoring, winners from the Challenge Tour events here have generally been able to compile a winning score of between -11 and -19:

  • 2020: Tyler Koivisto, -13
  • 2019: Jack Senior, -11
  • 2018: Calum Hill, -19
  • 2017: Robin Sciot-Siegrist, -6
  • 2016: Ryan Fox, -19
  • 2015: Clement Sordet, -17
  • 2014: Joakim Lagergren, -13
  • 2013: Daan Huizing, -13

Robin Sciot-Siegrist’s victory in 2017 was achieved in the hybrid ‘Shootout Sunday’ format, so his -6 winning score should be taken in context.

In terms of DP World-level events, it’s a similar story:

  • 2021: Daniel Gavins, -13
  • 2020: John Catlin, -10

John Catlin won here at -10 in the 2020 Irish Open, although that was in fairly tough conditions and only 22 players finished under par that week. On this World Invitational format last year, where Massereene was used for one of the pre-cut rounds, Daniel Gavins won at 13-under par.

Tournament Stats. We’ve published some key statistics for this week’s event that will help to shape a view on players who traditionally play well on this course.

As previously noted, Galgorm hosted this event last year, the 2020 Irish Open, plus the Challenge Tour’s Northern Ireland Open from 2013: Current Form | Course Form | First Round Leader Stats | Combined Course Stats.

Predictor Model. Our published Predictor Model is available here. As always you can build your own model using the variables available.

Course Winners. 2021 (ISPS World Invitational): Daniel Gavins (-13); 2020 (Irish Open): John Catlin (-10), 40/1; 2020 (ISPS World Invitational): Tyler Koivisto, -13; 2019 (Northern Ireland Open): Jack Senior, -11; 2018: Calum Hill, -19; 2017: Robin Sciot-Siegrist, -6; 2016: Ryan Fox, -19; 2015: Clement Sordet, -17; 2014: Joakim Lagergren, -13; 2013: Daan Huizing, -13.

Weather Forecast. The latest weather forecast for the area is here.

Largely dry and sunny for the 4 days with just the hint of a passing shower on Sunday. Winds will be sub-10mph throughout and temperatures peaking in the low 70s Fahrenheit.

Tournament Trends & Key Factors. Looking at the winners’ stats over the past 2 years gives us some idea of that kind of skill-sets that this week’s test demands, notwithstanding that last year’s event had 3 recorded rounds only at Galgorm Castle:

  • 2021: Daniel Gavins, 266 yards (48th), 64.3% fairways (8th), 68.5% greens in regulation (18th), 94.4% scrambling (1st), 1.73 putts per GIR (21st).
  • 2020: John Catlin, 279 yards (55th), 62.5% fairways (6th), 72.2% greens in regulation (6th), 80% scrambling (2nd), 1.78 putts per GIR (22nd).

Conditions were quite tricky when Galgorm hosted the 2020 Irish Open and with John Catlin and Aaron Rai battling it out for the win, it’s fair to say that accuracy prevailed over power. The rough was quite tricky in late September and conditions a little colder than we should expect this week, although a tidy all-round game should still go a long way, as it did back then.

Daniel Gavins’ stats were remarkably similar to Catlin’s in that accuracy off the tee and scrambling dominated, backed up a solid week from a GIR and putting perspective. Neither men are particularly long from off the tee, which is evident from their in-field rankings above, and last year’s runner-up David Horsey is another who you’d categorise as short, neat and tidy.

Strokes Gained: From a Strokes Gained perspective, we only have 2020 to go on as no stats were published last year. The long game aspects were more prominent amongst the leading players at that Irish Open renewal, although Aaron Rai did have an unusually good week on the greens given that his strength is typically far more from tee to green:

  • 1st: John Catlin: T: 23rd; A: 8th; T2G: 4th; ATG: 14th; P: 17th
  • 2nd: Aaron Rai: T: 20th; A: 18th; T2G: 18th; ATG: 31st; P: 2nd
  • 3rd: Maverick Antcliff: T: 31st; A: 6th; T2G: 5th; ATG: 12th; P: 26th
  • 3rd: Jazz Janewattananond: T: 26th; A: 21st; T2G: 16th; ATG: 8th; P: 12th
  • 5th: Joakim Lagergren: T: 6th; A: 30th; T2G: 15th; ATG: 25th; P: 18th
  • 5th: Oscar Lengden: T: 5th; A: 27th; T2G: 8th; ATG: 7th; P: 28th

Key: T: SG Off the Tee; A; SG Approach; T2G: SG Tee to Green; ATG: SG Around the Green; P: SG Putting.

Incoming Form: The solid-looking incoming form line of Daniel Gavins needs a little qualification as aside from a 42nd place finish at the BMW International Open 4 starts prior, the rest of his results were at Challenge Tour level – hence his 100/1 quote last year.

John Catlin arrived in sparkling form when Galgorm Castle hosted the Irish Open in 2020, having won the Andalucia Masters on his penultimate start before finishing 8th at Vilamoura.

Of the mixed bag of incoming form from the previous course winners on the Challenge Tour, what is noticeable is that this layout provided an early career breakthrough on 4 occasions. Tyler Koivisto is the most pronounced of the bunch, winning on his debut, but Calum Hill, Clement Sordet and Daan Huizing all had very few starts to their names when proving victorious here:

  • 2021 (ISPS World): Daniel Gavins: MC/7/12/MC/10/26/6/15/42/21/8/9
  • 2020 (Irish Open): John Catlin: 2/MC/MC/MC/8/43/51/6/MC/25/1/8
  • 2020: (Challenge Tour) Tyler Koivisto: Debut
  • 2019: Jack Senior: 58/MC/MC/33/MC/MC/MC/10/34/MC/11/42
  • 2018: Calum Hill: 61/47/26/MC/MC
  • 2017: Robin Sciot-Siegrist: 15/MC/5/MC/MC/38/MC/8/18/15/44/40
  • 2016: Ryan Fox: 4/11/MC/63/63/46/MC/NC/7/2/4/18
  • 2015: Clement Sordet: 20/2/MC/26/MC
  • 2014: Joakim Lagergren: MC/57/MC/MC/70/19/35/MC/62/38/MC/81
  • 2013: Daan Huizing: WD/MC/MC/61/46/2/5/19/4/5/18

Course Form: Despite not telling us much at all, I’ve included the course history of the winners here at Galgorm Castle since it was first used on the Challenge Tour. 7 of the 10 winners were making their competitive debuts around this track, which suggests it’s one that players can get to grips with very quickly:

  • 2020 (ISPS World): Daniel Gavins: MC/MC
  • 2020 (Irish Open): John Catlin: Debut
  • 2020: Tyler Koivisto: Debut
  • 2019: Jack Senior: 47/60/WD/52/MC/43
  • 2018: Calum Hill: Debut
  • 2017: Robin Sciot-Siegrist: 42
  • 2016: Ryan Fox: Debut
  • 2015: Clement Sordet: Debut
  • 2014: Joakim Lagergren: Debut
  • 2013: Daan Huizing: Debut

The blueprint for success may be a little more apparent after having seen Galgorm Castle over the past 2 seasons at the Irish Open and at this event 12 months ago. Longer hitters seemingly hold little advantage here, with more accurate types largely dominating the finishing positions over the two events. Scrambling also seems key, backed up by a solid week on the greens.

My selections are as follows:

David Law 2pts EW 28/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

A weak event has produced a fairly unappetising betting heat with Jordan Smith the clear favourite, despite missing the cut from the top of the market last week and seemingly a long way behind the consistent, contending form that we saw from him in the spring. In particular, the Englishman’s driving is a fair way off of his best right now, and I can overlook him this week.

I backed John Catlin here 12 months ago and he contrived to turn a potentially winning position into a tie for 7th with a 3-over final 9 on Sunday, however he was almost twice the price last year and coming in off of a better showing the week before, with last week’s tie for 54th and a closing 76 offering little in the way of encouragement.

The first player to really peak my interest is David Law. 43rd last week at Celtic Manor was fairly in keeping with his previous performances in the south of Wales on a course that’s never really suited his eye; that came hot on the heels of a contending 3rd place finish at Fairmont St Andrews the previous week, and he can be forgiven for last week’s effort given that the dimensions of Galgorm Castle and Massereene should suit the Scot a lot better. 4th at the Irish Open last month is also positive form on the parkland layout at Mount Juliet and he can be fancied to go well this week in my view.

8th and 9th here at Galgorm Castle in 2015 and 2017 respectively on the Challenge Tour signalled a liking for the course and 35th here in 2020 – his best result for that season to date in what was otherwise a poor year – and 15th last year does little to put me off in the this low grade. 1st for Driving Accuracy here 12 months ago suggests that he’s got the measure of the course from off the tee, and 11th for Scrambling is also noteworthy given the metrics I ran through in the preamble. David Horsey 1pt EW 40/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

If short, accurate and a decent short game worked for John Catlin and Daniel Gavins here over the past couple of years, then perhaps David Horsey can join the same club.

Always one of the more accurate types suited to shorter, more strategic setups, the 37 year-old hoovered up 4 titles between 2010 and 2015, all between 13- and 18-under par, which feels very much in keeping with what we should expect this week, and with Richie Ramsay breaking his 7-year losing streak in recent weeks, perhaps the Englishman can follow suit.

Certainly last year’s effort here offers some support to the case for Horsey making a comeback this week. After a poor season with nothing better than a 12th place finish on his record and arriving in Northern Ireland off the back of 3 straight missed cuts, Horsey went on to produce rounds of 67, 65 and 64 to sit in 2nd place heading into Sunday, which is where he ultimately finished after a closing round of 72.

This year’s incoming form is undoubtedly a little brighter, and he’s been far more upbeat about the state of his game in recent weeks on social media. 5th at the Kenya Open earlier in the year was positive and in recent weeks he was 9th heading into the weekend at the Cazoo Classic at Hillside, then finished 30th overall at the Hero Open on his last start. 5th and 11th for Driving Accuracy those weeks tells us that he’s back approaching his best from off the tee, and 11th for Scrambling last time out at Fairmont St Andrews is a good sign that his short game is in a good place right now.

The danger as ever is that he could tighten up on Sunday should he find himself in contention, however perhaps he can take inspiration from some of those winning recently such as Sean Crocker, Tony Finau (twice) and even Callum Shinkwin last week, who have each had their share of Sunday issues in the past. Dale Whitnell 1pt EW 45/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Another ticking the neat and tidy box is Dale Whitnell who’s still seeking his first DP World Tour title, having won a total of 9 times as a professional at lower levels.

Bogey avoidance rather than birdie making tends to be the 33 year-old’s game and although that’s not going to fill a cupboard with trophies at the higher levels, on the right course and in the right conditions that combination can work – given the winning totals of -13 and -10 we’ve seen here over the past 2 years, this test should suit.

Actually we have some evidence that Galgorm Castle is compatible with the Colchester man as he finished 11th here last year with 4 rounds in the 60s, improving on 39th at the previous year’s Irish Open and a missed cut the year before on his Challenge Tour course debut. 2nd for Driving Accuracy and 6th for Scrambling 12 months ago is the kind of stats I’d like to see for any of my players this week, and save for a stone cold putter last year he could have gone close to winning his maiden title at this level. The closest he’s got so far on Tour is 4th: a distant effort at Leopard Creek back in 2009, plus two more recent outings at Close House in 2020 and at Mount Juliet last year. Those two latter performances offer encouragement given this week’s course and a weak field.

16th at Mount Juliet again last month was solid, ranking 10th for SG Tee to Green and 2nd for SG Around the Green; 18th last week was also quietly competent with each of his SG long game performance stats in the top 16 in the field on the week. Perhaps he can push on from that effort and record a personal best on Tour by seriously contending here this week in Northern Ireland. RESULT: T28

John Murphy 1pt EW 50/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Finally I’ll take a chance on promising young Irishman John Murphy who could readily step up from Challenge Tour level, buoyed from having recorded his lowest professional round last week. A third round 62 at the Finnish Challenge powered the 23 year-old to second successive 3rd place finish on the second tier, having finished in the same position the previous week on home soil at the Irish Challenge at the K-Club’s South course.

Still relatively inexperienced with just 34 starts to his name thus far, when we’ve seen him in action at the upper level he’s shown some potential, notably finishing 24th at last year’s Spanish Open before recording another 3rd place finish on the Challenge Tour the week afterwards. His 9th place finish at last year’s Dunhill Links is the standout piece of form though, which saw the Kinsale man enter the final day in a tie for 2nd place in far stronger company than this, playing alongside eventual winner Danny Willett. It wasn’t to be for Murphy of course, however that’s useful experience to take forward as his career progresses.

That effort was links golf at the Home of Golf and this is parkland at Galgorm, however he’s shown aptitude on the latter, winning by 4 strokes at the 2021 Northern Ireland Open at Cairndhu Golf Club, and John will have played a mix of both styles of courses over his formative years so we shouldn’t be pigeon-holing him as a links specialist or otherwise just yet.

That victory earned Murphy a spot in the field here last year, and although he didn’t make the weekend rounds of 70/72 weren’t disastrous – with a further year’s worth of golf under his belt, perhaps he’ll build on his strong recent form and contend here this week. RESULT: MDF
