Course Guide: We have a brand new course on the PGA Tour to build into our thoughts. Oakdale Golf and Country Club is the 37th course in the 117 year history of the Canadian Open to host the tournament. By the way, the Canadian Open is the third oldest continuously run event on the PGA Tour. The course has never seen top level action, but will also be the host course for the 2026 renewal as well.

Course Overview: Oakdale G&CC features 3 distinct sets of 9-holes: the Thompson, the Homenuik, and the Knudson, named in honour of PGA Tour winner George Knudson. The course the PGA Tour will play this week is a hybrid, with holes taken across all 3 courses, including all 9 holes from Knudson.
The course, as you would expect in the lavish Oakdale – Beverley Heights suburb of Toronto, is a parkland, tree-lined affair and is classical in nature. The course only measures 7,264 yards, which is short as it’s a Par 72. But many of the holes, especially on the front side, are quite undulating, with uphill approach shots being predominant. The front-9 will undoubtedly be far more of a test, with the shorter back side producing a plethora of scoring opportunities.
It’s also a hybrid specimen, which features 3 par-3s and 3 par-5s and 12 par-4s. A 36/36 set-up, the front side features a single par-5 with a couple more on the back side.
Let’s start with the par-3s which compared to recent stop-offs on the PGA Tour look short. The 11th hole is the longest at 208 yards, with the 9th and the 14th coming in at 193 yards and 172 yards respectively. Small green complexes aside, last year’s venue St George’s Golf & Country Club had a more stringent feel to them, with 4 par-3s measuring between 200 and 215 yards long.
The 12 (yes 12) par-4s are intriguing too. The 1st (379 yards), 2nd (384 yards), 8th (354 yards), 10th (367 yards) 13th (424 yards), 15th (419 yards), 16th (398 yards) and 17th (432 yards) all look like birdie opportunities with a wedge in hand. There are no par-4s measuring above 490 yards, but it’s noticeable that the 4 stringent tests are all consecutive holes on the front side namely the 3rd through the 6th holes.
Onto the par-5s which at 590 (8th), 553 yards (12th) and 496 yards (18th) are gettable, and almost ludicrously short in terms of the closing hole. One thing to note though with the closing hole is that it plays seriously uphill. All-in-all, Oakdale looks a fair test in spots, but doesn’t look overly strenuous.
And it’s not as if Golf Canada are averse to low scores winning their national Open title. Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Jhonattan Vegas have won this title at -19, -22, -23 and -21 respectively over the last 4 renewals at St George’s (McIlroy), Hamilton G&CC (McIlroy) and Glen Abbey (Johnson and Vegas).

With no rain in Toronto for over 15 days and with none forecast until Sunday, Course Superintendent Patrick Greenman will have complete control of where he wants the golf course to be. With the PGA Tour in Oakdale for the very first time, I’d expect easy scoring conditions across for the main with watered receptive greens. Temperatures between 17-23 degrees Celsius – 63-73 Fahrenheit – will be comfortable with little of real interest until Sunday. The forecast suggests winds picking up to around 20mph from the north-west with a 60% chance of rain throughout the morning and into the afternoon. With no electrical activity attached, play will continue as long as the course allows.

First off we must remember that this week can be a nightmare for tipsters, punters and bookmakers alike with U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying taking place on Monday around 9 locations in the United States. Naturally players having to expand their efforts in the US-based qualifiers will not be arriving in Toronto, Ontario until late Monday evening at the earliest. And expect WDs in the direct build-up to the tournament through Monday and into Tuesday.
Traditionally, the mix of winners across the tournament before the U.S. Open is a little confusing. Up until recently, this week always saw the annual trip to TPC Southwind in Memphis for the FedEx St Jude Classic. Memphis produced 4 maiden PGA Tour victors in the last 9 renewals post-2010. That could be something worth bearing in mind. One of those was Daniel Berger who won at TPC Southwind at 33/1 (2016) and 28/1 when defending his first ever PGA our title (2017). For both of his wins the Floridian was ranked within the OWGR top 50.
Indeed high-class winners who had already qualified for the U.S. Open have won the week before in 2008, 2010 (12/1), 2012 (20/1), 2016 (33/1), 2017 (28/1), 2018 (7/1F), 2019 (10/1) and 2022 (10/1) – namely Justin Leonard, Lee Westwood, Daniel Berger (twice), Dustin Johnson (twice) and Rory McIlroy (twice). They undoubtedly took the opportunity to land a PGA Tour title with no hesitation, as did Garrick Higgo in 2021 who won at the one-off Palmetto Championship at 50/1. He entered the week ranked 54th in the OWGR and in red-hot form on the European Tour (as was) before grabbing a PGA Tour win as a non-member.
So that’s an elite (I have extended to the OWGR top 55 when victorious) winner the week before the U.S. Open percentage of 64% – 9 winners across the last 14 renewals – when the U.S. Open has been played in June. Food for thought, when linked to the Tour maidens angle as well.
My Final RBC Canadian Open Tips Are As Follows:
Matt Fitzpatrick 2.5pts ew 14/1 (8EW, 1/5) with William Hill
Matt Fitzpatrick will be looking to play well the week before he goes to Los Angeles to defend his U.S. Open title, and I think that Oakdale should suit him very nicely.
I can still remember watching the then 19 year-old Fitzpatrick with Golf Betting System colleague Paul Williams at the tree-lined, Marquess Course at Woburn back in 2015. Able to flight the ball both ways, Fitzpatrick was like a baby-faced assassin that week, taking the coveted British Masters as his maiden DP World Tour title. His -15/269 beat the likes of Shane Lowry (2nd), Luke Donald (5th), Tommy Fleetwood (13th), Tyrrell Hatton (13th) and Lee Westwood (17th) that particular week.
2 wins at the quirky Crans-sur-Sierre (2017 and 2018), plus wins at Valderrama (2021), Brookline Country Club (2022) and Harbour Town Golf Links (2023), highlight that Fitzpatrick really comes to town on shorter, tree-lined tracks, and I think that the World Number 8 will be looking forward to his third RBC Canadian Open. He was 10th last year at St George’s G&CC just a couple of weeks after his final round tribulations at the Southern Hills hosted PGA Championship.
9th for Strokes Gained Off the Tee (8th for Driving Distance), 8th for Tee to Green, it was only the putter (39th for Strokes Gained) which really held Fitzpatrick back at Muirfield Village last week. For me, an almost 7,600 yard, Par 72, is still ultimately too long for Matt in an elite field, but his play in Ohio was notable. 8th for final 54 hole and T2 for final 36 hole scoring at “Jack’s Place” highlights that the 28 year-old’s game is in rude health. Sam Burns 2.5pts ew 14/1 (8EW, 1/5) with William Hill
I’ll also go for the win equity associated with Sam Burns this week. Fact is that Burns will never be a predictor model or line-up optimizer darling on the basis that his game fluctuates wildly at times. However he’s won on the PGA Tour 5 times in his last 53 starts. In this field that ranks second only to defending champion and Canadian Open 3-peat candidate Rory McIlroy, who has won 5 times in his last 36 PGA Tour starts or 6 times in his last 46 starts worldwide.
It has to be said that I prefer Burns on Bermudagrass agronomy, but he’s shown enough “Up-State” form to merit inclusion. 7th (Minnesota), 9th (Maryland) and 4th in Toronto (St George’s G&CC) last year highlight a player who can contend for PGA Tour titles outside of his native south-eastern United States. He’s also contended on greens featuring Poa Annua namely Silverado (7th 2020) and Riviera Country Club (3rd 2021).
So coming from a 16th place finish at Muirfield Village which is ultimately too long and potentially tough for Burns, I think this short, scoreable test at Oakdale will be far more to his liking this week. To this point Sam has really been quite a specialist – all of his wins coming on short-to-medium length golf courses.
So “relevant” form in my mind reads 6th at Valspar when defending (medium length Par 71), 1st at the WGC-Dell World Match Play (short Par 71 set-up), 15th at Harbour Town (short Par 71 set-up) and 6th at Colonial (medium Par 70 set-up). Finished with Finau, Thomas and Rose in the slipstream of Rory at St George’s 12 months ago, which ultimately played a little tougher than the scoring we should see here at Oakdale. RESULT: MC

Sahith Theegala 1.5pts ew 28/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365
If we go down the route of maiden PGA Tour winners, I think that Sahith Theegala will go well this week at Oakdale. Now 27th in the World Rankings, he is the third-highest player in those rankings playing this week not to have a PGA Tour victory to his name, behind only Cameron Young and Tommy Fleetwood. For a player of his undoubted enthusiasm, capability and talent, that win you would assume has to come soon for the Spring, Texas resident.
This season has seen the 25 year-old Pepperdine University graduate finish 6th at Silverado, 5th at Narashino, 2nd at Sea Island, 4th at Torrey Pines, 6th at Riviera, 14th at Bay Hill and 9th at Augusta National. Naturally that was his first top 10 in a Major Championship and he was the top debutant.
To this point in a young career, Sahith has been a lover of short golf courses, where driver off the tee can be avoided – Oakdale with a plethora of short par-4s will certainly play to that strategy. And with his California background he’s useful enough on greens featuring Poa Annua as 2nd at TPC River Highlands (2022), plus those aforementioned top 6 finishes this season in the Golden State highlight admirably. At 7th for Birdie Average on the PGA Tour this season he ranks highest in the field, which will come in handy at an event where Birdie or Better conversion rate for victory has been 36% (St George’s), 38% (Hamilton) and 38% (Glen Abbey), over the past 3 renewals. RESULT: T38

Adrian Meronk is also worth a bet this week at the RBC Canadian Open as he chases his fifth National Open title and fourth in less than 12 months. Rewind to 2019 when on the European Challenge Tour Meronk won the Open de Portugal played at Morgado. His second Open was of the 2022 Irish Open variety, played at Mount Juliet. This was his maiden DP World Tour title, winning from the likes of Ryan Fox, Thriston Lawrence, Thorbjorn Olesen, Lucas Herbert, Shane Lowry, Aaron Rai and Robert MacIntyre, all of whom were in the top 13 finishers.
Now into the OWGR top 50, Meronk has really stepped forward in the past 6 months or so and is now challenging for a Team Europe Ryder Cup spot. 7th at the DP World Tour Championship last November, he then flew to Australia where he took out the Australian Open at the Victoria Golf Club, beating Adam Scott, Min Woo Lee, Lucas Herbert and Nicolai Hojgaard into the bargain. That win also qualified him for the 2023 Masters after breaking in the world’s top 50 players.
2023 has continued to be a good hunting ground for Adrian. 10th at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and 4th at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship on the DP World Tour, Meronk then started a United States campaign where he hasn’t disappointed. 45th at the Genesis Invitational and 14th at the Honda Classic, the East Tennessee State University graduate also beat Kurt Kitayama and Christiaan Bezuidenhout in the Group stages of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.
A missed cut at The Masters followed, but playing at the PGA Tour level helped on his return to Europe, where he took out the Italian Open played at this year’s Ryder Cup venue, namely Marco Simone G&CC. 40th at the PGA Championship – his second Major championship cut made and 5th at the KLM Dutch Open have followed.
