The 2021 U.S. Open takes place at world-renowned Torrey Pines between Thursday 17th June and Sunday 20th June 2021. During our research it became clear that a vast number of the field have not played Torrey Pines South Course on a regular basis. It’s worth remembering that the PGA Tour Farmers Insurance Open is played at Torrey Pines every January. That event is played over both Torrey Pines South – this week’s U.S. Open host course – and North courses, with a single round played on the easier North across Thursday or Friday.

So for those of you wanting a full rundown of the whole 2021 U.S. Open field from a Farmers Insurance Open perspective, then our course form analysis tracker is worth a look.

However, because it’s the U.S. Open we’ve taken things a stage further. Below we’ve stripped out all rounds across Torrey Pines South Course for the 2017 through 2021 renewals of the Farmers Insurance Open. This provides a pure South Course scoring average across the whole 2021 U.S. Open field.

It’s worth noting that:

  1. This only covers the 5 Farmers Insurance Open tournaments played between 2017 and 2021. No other professional or amateur tournaments are included.
  2. There’s no minimum round requirement.
  3. Scoring average takes into account no local conditions or weather conditions.

The table below includes each player’s average score made on Torrey Pines South across the last 5 renewals of the Farmers Insurance Open. It also includes the number of rounds played. So as an example Tony Finau has played all 15 Torrey Pines South rounds across 2017 to 2021, averaging 70.33 per round.

Adam Scott tops the chart with an overall 69.50 scoring average across 6 rounds played at Torrey Pines South. Rounds of 69-72-73-70-65-68 across 2 visits to Torrey Pines make up this total.

The Australian’s nearest challenger is 2021 Farmers Insurance Open victor Patrick Reed. Patrick clearly loves Torrey Pines and has played all Farmers events since 2018. A 69.83 average score is impressive across 12 South Course rounds, with only a single (73) round over par.

Rory McIlroy and Charl Schwartzel are tied for 3rd spot at 70.25, with the South African available this week at large triple-digit odds. It seems a great track for McIlroy, as long as he can start well on Thursday – a perennial problem in recent Majors.

And then we have Tony Finau who Golf Betting System Podcast know as ‘T4 Tony.’ He struggles to win, granted, but it’s fact that the Utah-born 31 year-old is a Major each-way machine. 4 top-5 or 9 top-10s in his last 13 Major appearances is amazing consistency and Finau, across 15 round at Torrey Pines South, has a cracking 70.33 average.

Leishman (2020 Farmers Champion), Rahm (2017 Farmers Champion) and Justin Rose (2019 Farmers Champion) all predictably sit in the top 10 Torrey Pines South average scorers, with Hovland, Kokrak and Morikawa also interesting names within the top 12.

This analysis also highlights some short-priced favourites whose form at Torrey Pines, and on the South Course in particular, to this point has been unspectacular to say the least. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau has played at a couple of Farmers Insurance Opens, scoring 76(+4) and 78(+6) on the South Course. Jordan Spieth’s return to form in 2021 has been spectacular, but to this point he’s only broken par once  – a 70 in 2020 – his average score of 72.57 ranks 53rd of 85 in this U.S. Open field.

Plus recent Memorial Tournament winner Patrick Cantlay has never broken par in 4 South Course attempts.
