Scottie Scheffler dominated at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week in his home town of Dallas. He was best priced 14/5 on Monday. I landed a full 18/1 each-way return on Jordan Spieth and a part 30/1 each-way return on Sam Burns.

The PGA Tour travels to a new course and has a new sponsor this week – let me explain. Wells Fargo have been replaced by Truist (another bank), so this is now the Truist Championship and will be for the next 7 years. Host course has always been Quail Hollow Club, so with that being the 2025 PGA Championship venue next week, this Signature status event has been taken to a new course – the Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club, Pennsylvania. Last week’s winner – his 14th on the PGA Tour – Scottie Scheffler is the only big name giving this a swerve.

Before we go into the detail surrounding the Truist Championship, we always have new visitors to Golf Betting System. Welcome and let me point you in the direction of our weekly Golf Betting System Podcast (published every Tuesday of the golfing calendar), the Steve Bamford Golf Channel on YouTube, and our hugely popular, +6,500 strong, private Group on Facebook – you can Join Here.

Course Guide: We should be in for a treat this week as the Wissahickon is an old-style classic. Restored to its full 1922 glory by Keith Foster in 2013, this is an A.W. Tillinghast original and it’s the course he called his home course. Indeed Tillinghast had such affection for this course that his ashes were scattered in the Wissahickon Creek here. A short Par 70, this will be the first time in 2025 that we see Northern State agronomy with fescue and Bentgrass. In 2016, Wissahickon hosted the PGA Constellation Senior Players Championship, won by Bernhard Langer.

For reference, when researching the course the 1st hole will be the course 8th hole. The PGA Tour scorecard then plays Holes 9 to 7, as the 2nd Hole to the 18th.

Wissahickon Course – Philadelphia Cricket Club, Flourtown, Pennsylvania: Designer: A.W.Tillinghast, 1922 with Keith Foster Renovation 2013; Course Type: Classical, Mid-Score, Upstate, Short Length; Par: 70; Length: 7,119 yards; Holes with Water Hazards In-Play: 6; Number of Sand Bunkers: 118: Acres of Fairway: 26; Fairways: 007 Bentgrass; Rough: Tall Fescue 3″; Greens: 5,779 sq.ft average featuring Bentgrass; Tournament Stimp: 11.5ft.

Philadelphia Cricket Club Fairway Widths (yards): Below are the fairway widths for Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club and how they compare to recent courses that we’ve seen on Tour:

Course Designer Links: For research purposes, other A.W. Tillinghast designs include:

A.W. Tillinghast

  • Baltusrol GC – 2005 & 2016 PGA Championship
  • Bethpage State Park – Black Course – 2000 + 2009 U.S. Open, 2019 PGA Championship + 2012 + 2016 Barclays Tournaments
  • Ridgewood Country Club – 2010 & 2014 The Barclays – 2018 Northern Trust.
  • Winged Foot – West Course -2006 + 2020 U.S. Open

Course Overview: Philadelphia Cricket Club can’t be much more different to TPC Craig Ranch which we saw at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week. Classical in nature, this is an A.W. Tillinghast design which certainly looks the part. Most holes are typically straight – think Firestone South – but this course is wider off the tee, has far more sand bunkers in-play and far less trees than the old WGC-Bridgestone Invitational venue we used to visit in Akron, Ohio. It’s also almost 300 yards shorter.

The Wissahickon has generous driving areas, which is a mark of old-style designs. Tillinghast wanted to reward strategy and shot-making skills. While a poor drive at the Wissahickon will rarely result in a penalty stroke, it will lead to an incredibly difficult shot due to angles and hazards around the green. In order to score well, players must hit their shots in the right spots of the fairway in order to leave the correct angle of approach to the challenging and well-protected green complexes.

Rough for this week is set at 3 inches and the course features 118 sand bunkers, which cover 2.38 acres. Green complexes in the main tend to be raised, with plenty of bunker surrounds. There’s also tall fescue on a number of holes. It’s also very noticeable that the vast majority of holes have small, unhindered, fairway entrances into green complexes, which golfers who miss off the tee can effectively use to recover from with a pitch up the green to save par, or to make birdies on the par-5s.

Green complexes themselves are moderate in size; many are cantered from back to front, as per classic designs such as Donald Ross, plus feature Bentgrass putting surfaces.

Weather Forecast: The latest weather forecast for Flourtown, Pennsylvania is here.

Pennsylvania in May looks a mixed bag and relatively cold. 24mm – just under an inch – of rain across Saturday and Sunday will have doused Philadelphia Cricket Club, plus there’s 70% chance of more precipitation across Monday night and Tuesday. With no Sub Air and the potential of more rain on Thursday and Friday, I’d expect at least soft fairway conditions if not receptive greens.

Temperatures also interest. 21 Celsius – 70 Fahrenheit – on Thursday is pleasant enough. That falls to 9 degrees Celsius – 48 Fahrenheit on Friday and 15 degrees – 59 Fahrenheit on Friday. For me that’s more Northern European than United States. Winds could also gust 25mph on Friday from the North.

My final Truist Championship tips are as follows:

Patrick Cantlay 2pts EW 18/1 (8EW, 1/5) with Betfred

Patrick Cantlay for me will love the move to a Bentgrass golf course with Fescue rough this week. 5 of his 7 individual PGA Tour victories have been on pure Bentgrass putting surfaces and you can add another Bentgrass/Poa Annua mix victory (2019 Memorial Tournament) as well. 6 from 7 tells a story and his 2021 Tour Championship victory on East Lake’s Bermudagrass greens only came on the basis he started the tournament as the FedEx Cup leader at -10. He actually came 4th for 72-hole scoring.

Cantlay loves to play Up-State. TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas must be close to Patrick’s favourite course, especially as he won his maiden PGA Tour title there in 2017, but since then the American North-East has been Cantlay’s hunting ground. 2019 and 2021 Memorial Tournament victories came at Muirfield Village in Ohio. 2021 BMW Championship FedEx Cup Playoff victories have followed across Maryland and Delaware. 3rd at the 2019 PGA Championship hosted at Bethpage Black in New York was on an A.W. Tillinghast course, and Cantlay’s result CV is littered with additional top-3, top-5 and top-10 finishes across Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

At 11th in the Team USA Ryder Cup standings, being outperformed by the likes of Russell Henley, Maverick McNealy, Brian Harman, Andrew Novak and J.J. Spaun, Patrick could undoubtedly do with a win, and seeing the likes of Justin Thomas break his 3-year PGA Tour drought a fortnight ago at the RBC Heritage must spur on even further a player like Cantlay, who himself hasn’t hit the winner’s lane since the 2022 BMW Championship.

Ranked in the top 10 in this field across my 8-week tournament trackers for Off the Tee, Approach, Tee to Green and Current Form, I would happily take Patrick’s Strokes Gained Putting performance on the Bentgrass greens of Augusta National where he gained over half a stroke per round with the flat stick.

Jordan Spieth 2pts EW 25/1 (8EW, 1/5) with Ladbrokes

A superb closing 36 holes at a weak CJ Byron Nelson doesn’t make a season, but I’m going to stick with Jordan Spieth. Undoubtedly Jordan is finally starting to find momentum, and the putter started filling the cup for the final 19 holes at TPC Craig Ranch. A -13/129 Saturday and Sunday total tied with Scottie Scheffler and was only surpassed by Erik van Rooyen – fair play to the South African. 7th for Greens in Regulation and 8th for Ball Striking in old money, Jordan from a Strokes Gained perspective ranked 7th for Driving, 5th for Approach, and 3rd for Tee to Green.

4th at the Byron Nelson is great and it fuels momentum but little has changed when it comes to the bigger picture. Up to 25th in the Team USA Ryder Cup standings and back in the OWGR top 50, it’s fact that Keegan Bradley won’t pick him unless Jordan delivers far better and consistent results. His best mate Justin Thomas delivered his first win for 3 years a fortnight ago at the RBC Heritage to frank his Ryder Cup chances, and now 31 year-old Spieth could do with exactly the same tonic.

For me it’s not out of the realms of possibility at Philadelphia Cricket Club for the Truist Championship, where the World Number 1 is having the week off and where Rory McIlroy last week has been in New York doing the usual media rounds which go with winning the Green Jacket. Take those two out of the equation and this Truist Championship field opens out the week before the PGA Championship.

That pre-Majors form line is also fascinating with Jordan, who always likes to arrive in the very peak of his form. So since his rookie season of 2013 in outings prior to a Major, Spieth has finished 1st at the 2013 John Deere Classic, 7th at the 2014 John Deere Classic, 2nd at the 2015 Houston Open, 3rd at the 2015 Memorial Tournament, 1st at the 2015 John Deere Classic, 10th at the 2015 WGC Bridgestone Invitational, 3rd at the 2016 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, 1st at the 2017 Travelers Championship, 3rd at the 2018 Houston Open, 7th at the 2019 Memorial Tournament, 1st at the 2021 Valero Texas Open, 2nd at the 2022 Byron Nelson, 10th at the 2022 Scottish Open, 5th at the 2023 Memorial Tournament and 10th at the 2024 Valero Texas Open. That’s 4 victories, plus an additional 6 top-5s and 5 top-10s.

An A.W. Tillinghast design enquiry line also holds water as Jordan over his past 6 outings on Tillinghast tracks has finished 3rd (2019 PGA Championship) and 10th (2018) at Bethpage Black, plus has supporting 13th to 25th place finishes across Baltusrol and Ridgewood.

Shane Lowry 1.5pts EW 33/1 (8EW, 1/5) with bet365

Cantlay and Spieth lead the way for me this week and I’m following that pair up with Shane Lowry. If anything was ever going to motivate you – post celebrations – and drive you forward to deliver more in your own career, it has to be seeing your best mate on Tour win The Masters and at the same time his career Grand Slam.

Ask the jovial Irishman the question and despite cowering in fear of the response, I’m sure Shane would admit that he would like a few more PGA Tour victories in the United States. Well I think Philadelphia Cricket Club will be very much in Lowry’s wheelhouse. As a city Philadelphia has a huge Irish community so expect plenty of Rory and Shane support, plus this short, Bentgrass, A.W. Tillinghast, Par 70 classic should appeal. As should the very non-PGA Tour weather over Friday and Saturday, where temperatures are set to tumble and there could be some rain and wind thrown-in. Many in this Truist field won’t fancy that, but Shane will stick to his guns with no problems. Remember his runner-up finish to Rory at Pebble Beach in February, where the elements were tough.

Top 5 for Strokes Gained Tee to Green and top 7 for Strokes Gained Current Form in this field across my 8-week Strokes Gained trackers, Shane’s only United States single victory was in neighbouring Ohio at Firestone South, way back in 2015.

Justin Rose 1pt EW 60/1 (8EW, 1/5) with bet365

A Bentgrass-based, classical, old-style golf course in Pennsylvania, played in northern Europe type conditions screams Justin Rose to me. Rose has won 11 times on the PGA Tour and 8 of those have come on classical layouts of which 7 were on Bentgrass greens – he’s behind only Rory McIlroy in Bentgrass greens in this field – and if he’d won the Masters play-off instead of Rory, the two would be locked on 8 Bentgrass green PGA Tour wins apiece.

This is also Justin’s most prolific area of the United States. 10th at the 2007 U.S. Open (Oakmont), 1st at the 2010 AT&T National (Aronimink), 1st at the 2013 U.S. Open (Merion) and 2nd at the 2018 BMW Championship (Aronimink) have all come in Pennsylvania. Spread the net ever so slightly with neighbouring states and we get Maryland: 1st 2014 Quicken Loans National (Congressional); New Jersey: 6th 2011 The Barclays (Plainfield), 2nd 2013 The Barclays (Liberty National), 10th 2019 The Northern Trust (Liberty National); Virginia: 4th 2015 Quicken Loans National (Robert Trent Jones Golf Club). 4th 2004, 2nd 2008, 1st 2010, 8th 2012, 8th 2013, 2nd 2015, 6th 2018 – The Memorial Tournament (Muirfield Village); 2nd 2007, 5th 2012, 4th 2014, 3rd 2015 – WGC Bridgestone Invitational (Firestone South).

Much of this form is dated I grant you, but Rose in 2025 Ryder Cup qualification guise has mixed it in big tournaments. 3rd at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and 8th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (Bay Hill) were both at Signature event level, and his 2nd at The Masters just a few weeks ago rolled back the years. His win at the 2015 Zurich Classic of New Orleans also came just after finishing runner-up at Augusta.
