First Round Leader (FRL) golf betting is a popular market across Major Championship, PGA Tour and DP World Tour golf. A 1st Round Leader bet in reality is just that – a wager placed on a golfer to be in first place after Round 1 of a given tournament. Rather than waiting over a four-day period to find out the final result, First Round Leader bets are usually settled by the close of Thursday’s play, making results relatively fast, independent from the overall tournament result, and potentially profitable if you can pick the right players.

The attraction of First Round Leader betting is that prices for big-name players are generally much bigger than in the outright winner market. A great example of this is the 2026 Open Championship played at Royal Birkdale, where both Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy were quoted at around 7/1 and 8/1 to win The Open respectively. In the First Round Leader market both were available at 20/1 to lead after Round 1. For readers who are wondering, young American Jackson Suber shot a Thursday 65 to be First Round Leader at prices up to 150/1 (with Ladbrokes).

Established in 2008, Golf Betting System has been advising and providing detailed free data for golf betting ever since. You can also listen to our weekly Golf Betting System podcast (published every Tuesday of the golfing calendar), which is also available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and on the Steve Bamford Golf YouTube Channel.

What is First Round Leader Betting?

First Round Leader betting, often shortened to FRL betting, is a golf betting market where you are betting on which player will be leading the tournament after the opening 18 holes. Markets are offered by leading bookmakers for all PGA Tour and DP World Tour events where a single course is in use.

Unlike an outright tournament bet which is typically settled across 4 rounds (72 holes) of competition, a First Round Leader bet is settled entirely on the opening round (18 holes, usually on a Thursday). Once every player has completed their first 18 holes, the golfer with the lowest score is deemed to be the First Round Leader.

Results can be volatile because, in a field of up to 156 professionals, plenty will play well over just 18 holes whilst the better players have more time to move up the leaderboard across the full 4 days of competition.

There can also be more than one First Round Leader. If two or more players finish Round 1 tied for the lowest score, bookmakers will normally apply their dead-heat rules to winning bets unless the market or promotion specifically states otherwise.

Most bookmakers (not all, including BetMGM and Unibet) also offer each-way First Round Leader betting, paying a specified number of places – market standard is 5 places – at a fraction – 1/4 (25%) or 1/5 (20%) – of the odds taken. This means your player doesn’t necessarily have to lead after 18 holes for you to receive a return.

First Round Leader betting is therefore a more volatile golf market, where the challenge is finding the golfer capable of producing one outstanding round on Thursday.

How Does First Round Leader Betting Work?

Choosing a First Round Leader(s)

Reputable online bookmakers will have a First Round Leader market for each tournament. Here at Golf Betting System we focus on Men’s Major Championship, PGA Tour and DP World Tour golf, but First Round Leader markets are also available across the LPGA, LET, plus minor Tours such as the Korn Ferry Tour or the Seniors Tour. Tournaments that use a multi-course format like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Sentry (which is being played at Torrey Pines in 2027), The American Express (PGA West) or Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (St Andrews) generally don’t have an overall First Round Leader market, although some bookmakers may offer smaller, individual markets for each course being used for that event.

Win-Only or Each-Way

A win-only bet pays if your golfer finishes Round 1 in the leading position, subject to the bookmaker’s dead-heat rules when players are tied (quoted odds will be reduced). Punter methodology varies, but some like to play win-only in a First Round Leader market where each-way places provided aren’t as generous, plus some online bookmakers (BetMGM and Unibet) don’t offer an each-way facility.

An Each-Way First Round Leader bet sees the stake split into a win bet and a place bet. For example, £5 each-way at 80/1 costs £10, with £5 on the win and £5 on the place.

First Round Leader Each-Way Places

Standard amount of places offered on First Round Leader bets in the UK and Republic of Ireland is 5 Places at 1/4 odds the place. So on the each-way segment of the bet, place settlement would be on the top 5 finishers on the 18-hole leaderboard.

An 80/1 golfer at 1/4 odds (25%) effectively pays 20/1 on the place portion, subject to ties/dead heats. You can find out more about the impact of dead heats in our Reduction For Ties In Golf Betting article.

With the online betting market being a competitive landscape, some bookmakers offer more places above industry standard – up to 7 places at the 2026 Open Championship, for instance – but with 1/5 odds the place. So there’s more opportunity to profit, but at 20% of the odds taken. Further in this guide we highlight bookmakers who regularly offer extended First Round Leader places.

Tied Leaders, Dead Heats, Reduction for Ties

Unlike the outright market in golf betting where a play-off is used to determine the eventual winner, with FRL betting there are often ties for both the first round lead as well as the each-way places given that many players may shoot similar or identical scores on the opening day.

Where the first round lead or the each-way places are contested by more than one player, bookmakers will apply a ‘Dead Heat Rule’ to reflect the fact that there was a tie. In simplistic terms this means that if two players tie for the lead then your return is halved; if three players tie for the lead then you receive a third of your expected return and so on.

Each-way FRL betting complicates matters a little, however here’s a real, recent example from the 2026 BMW PGA Championship which puts the calculations into context.

The day 1 leaderboard finished as follows:

  • 1st Joakim Lagergren, 100/1
  • 1st Aaron Rai, 33/1
  • 3rd Nacho Elvira, 100/1
  • 3rd Ryan Gerard, 33/1
  • 3rd Ludvig Aberg, 28/1
  • 3rd Adam Scott, 40/1

The odds were taken from a bookmaker offering 5 places each way, 1/4 odds in this market which is fairly typical.

Now let’s assume that you’d backed Joakim Lagergren £10 EW at 100/1, so his flying finish to tie Aaron Rai’s early round of 66 would have been a pleasing result. However, because he tied Rai’s score he won’t receive a full payout on the win element, but will receive a full payout on the each-way element as such:

  • Win element: (100+1)/2 = 50.5 x £10 = £505
  • Place element: (100/4) +1 = 26 x £10 = £260
  • Total return: £765

Had Lagergren made 1 more birdie and been the outright leader then you could remove the ‘/2’ element from the calculation and the return would have been £1,270 instead.

The each-way place element that is paid will depend on how many each-way places were available and how many players tied for the last paying place. So, in this example, 4 players tied for the remaining 3 each-way places seeing as the bookmaker offered 5 places, 1/4 odds.

Let’s assume we’d backed Nacho Elvira at 100/1, the calculation would be as follows:

  • Place element ((100/4) +1)*3/4 = 19.5 x £10 = £195

Again that’s a nice return, however if there’d only been 3 players tied for 3rd place instead of 4 then you could dispose of the ‘*3/4’ element and the return would have been £260.

If all this seems complicated then don’t worry, the bookmakers will do the calculations for you and you can check their working out against our Reduction for Ties in Golf Betting article.

Some bookmakers offer better each-way terms in the FRL market with 6 or 7 places, 1/5 odds available in selected events and Majors, which can help mitigate the reductions when ties occur.

Why Bet on the First Round Leader?

The overall answer here is that it can be profitable, if the right data and research takes place. It’s effectively you against the bookmaker odds compiler, and with virtually all First Round Leader markets being settled on a Thursday, there’s plenty of time for detailed research, gathering feedback on how the course is playing from social media and media sources, plus looking at detailed weather reports to see if a player’s tee time will be pivotal in terms of a lower scoring window.

Using a pin to select a player(s) in a field of 144 or even 156 players in the First Round Leader market from a probability perspective is highly unlikely to be profitable. Be that for one tournament or especially a prolonged period.

Use specialised resources though like First Round Leader Form Sheets produced by Golf Betting System in tandem with historical tee-off times of previous First Round Leader winners and detailed weather forecasts; allied to keeping an eye on bookmaker odds plus enhanced each-way place terms, this helps improve the chance of profit.

  1. Bigger Odds and Potential Returns

The First Round Leader market offers bigger prices on the best players every week. Here are some working examples for you of elite golfers, and one not so elite golfer, and how they perform in First Round Leader scenarios.

Scottie Scheffler: 2026 FRL Performance

The World Number 1 generally went off at 5/1 and shorter across the whole of the 2026 golf season, including Major Championships. The biggest price we can find for Scottie was at the 2026 Open Championship where he was a Monday best price of 7/1 Favourite.

Look at Scottie Scheffler across 2026 First Round Leader markets though and he was a 10/1–20/1 bet all year at full-field events. Biggest price was 20/1 at the Open Championship, with 15/2 the shortest at the 30-man Tour Championship season FedEx Cup finale.

Through 2026 Scheffler was First Round Leader at the PGA Championship at best price of 16/1, plus he placed in the each-way places at The Masters (14/1), Travelers Championship (14/1), 3M Open (11/1) and Tour Championship (15/2).

Rory McIlroy: First Round Leader Record

Rory McIlroy – First Round Leader Master

We like to provide unique content and data for golf betting here at Golf Betting System. Using our PGA Tour First Round Leader Performance Summary it’s clear that Rory McIlroy is by far the best Thursday player in recent times.

Take 2026 alone where he was First Round Leader 4 times across 13 applicable PGA Tour tournaments. That’s a 31% hit rate. Even better than that is the disparity in odds when you compare his Overall Tournament Winner price to First Round Leader price.

  • 2026 Genesis Invitational – First Round Leader 22/1
  • 2026 Masters Tournament – First Round Leader 20/1
  • 2026 Scottish Open – First Round Leader 22/1
  • 2026 BMW Championship – First Round Leader 20/1

For reference, McIlroy was best price 12/1 (Genesis), 12/1 (Masters), 10/1 (Scottish Open) and 14/1 (BMW) to win the 72-hole tournament.

Eric Cole – First Round Leader Specialist

Eric Cole is yet to win on the PGA Tour since graduating in 2022, regularly disappointing outright winner backers. He’s been close on multiple occasions, but is yet to get over the line and claim his maiden PGA Tour victory at the time of writing. Winning over 72 holes is difficult and that makes his regular 33/1–66/1 odds in overall markets very difficult to make profitable.

So this is where First Round Leader betting for those with knowledge can be profitable, as where Eric generally struggles on Sundays, he thrives on Thursdays:

  • 2025 Sony Open in Hawaii – First Round Leader – 80/1
  • 2025 Sanderson Farms Championship – First Round Leader – 80/1
  • 2026 RBC Canadian Open – First Round Leader – 50/1
  • 2026 Travelers Championship – First Round Leader – 66/1
  • 2026 Biltmore Championship – First Round Leader – 45/1

For the record Eric converted only one of these to a full each-way return over 72 holes – that was the 2025 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Since his 2022 promotion to the PGA Tour, Cole has also finished runner-up in the First Round Leader market across the 2023 and 2024 ZOZO Championships plus the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

  1. Only 18 Holes to Beat the Field

Unlike outright tournament betting, a player doesn’t need to maintain his performance across four rounds. One outstanding Thursday can be enough. The bet tends to be over in a day, unless there’s a delay in play. Naturally outright bets across 72 holes take 4 days for their conclusion.

  1. Tee-Time and Weather Advantages

Different playing conditions between the morning and afternoon waves can create opportunities to identify players whose odds may underestimate their chances.

Here’s an example from the Wyndham Championship played in August on the PGA Tour, where 5 of the last 6 First Round Leaders teed-off in the AM wave with softer, fresh greens:

  • 2026 – Hossler – AM -9/61 – 90/1.
  • 2025 – Dahmen – AM -9/61 – 150/1.
  • 2024 – Hossler – AM -10/60 – 110/1.
  • 2023 – Henley – PM -8/62 – 40/1.
  • 2022 – Huh – AM -9/61 – 125/1.
  • 2021 – Henley – AM -8/62 – 50/1.

If you see Russell Henley and Beau Hossler in a future Wyndham field, especially when teeing off in the morning, it might be worth a speculative bet.

Spreadex – Additional Each-Way Places

Hertfordshire-based Spreadex have offered online fixed odds betting on golf since 2010. From a First Round Leader perspective they are an essential operator to have in your betting account portfolio. The reason being that across Major Championships, PGA Tour and DP World Tour golf tournaments they consistently offer their First Round Leader market with 6 places each way at 1/5 odds.

That’s an additional place spot over the bulk of the industry week in, week out with Spreadex, which few of the UK online bookmaker giants get close to. With First Round Leader results being so volatile, that additional place is well worth investing in each week, plus Spreadex often match market-best odds as well. They are a must-have sports betting account to have for Golf First Round Leader aficionados.

Golf Betting System recommends Spreadex for golf punters – sign up for a new sportsbook account below:

✅ Up to £60 in free bets for new customers using this qualifying link
✅ Both fixed odds and spread betting markets available
✅ 3 cashout options available

Spreadex New Customer Offer: Place a £10 fixed odds single or £10 each-way bet at minimum odds of 1/2 and, once your qualifying bet has been settled, get 3 x £10 free fixed odds bets, 3 x £5 Total Goals football spread bets and 3 x £5 Player Round Score spread bets. 18+ www.gambleaware.org. #Ad

How to Find First Round Leader Selections

Here are some basics to help you make informed and potentially profitable First Round Leader selections:

Step 1 – Analyse First Round Leader Strike Rates

Use Golf Betting System First Round Leader statistics sheets to highlight specific players who regularly perform well on Thursdays.  Sheets are updated each week and are available below. Our data goes back to 2022, highlighting the best First Round Leader players to focus upon and those who never produce a fast start. PGA Tour | DP World Tour | Combined PGA/DP World Tour.

Step 2 – Research Tournament History

On all Major Championships and PGA Tour tournaments, check out my Monday betting previews available at Golf Betting System, which detail:

  • Who were the First Round Leaders by year.
  • Historical best-odds they won at.
  • What wave the winners played so AM, PM or specific Group No. Patterns regularly occur.

Step 3 – Examine First Round Statistics

Here at Golf Betting System, on a Wednesday morning we provide First Round Leader statistics across each relevant tournament which detail:

  • First Round Leader wins plus First Round Leader Top 5 for the tournament.
  • Average Round 1 Score at the tournament.
  • First Round Leader Current Form by player.
  • Nominated tee times of each player in the field.

Step 4 – Check Weather Forecasts and Tee Times

Linking steps 1, 2 and 3 to how Thursday scoring might be affected by weather is particularly important when it comes to First Round Betting. No matter how fast a starter a particular player is when it comes to a Thursday, if they are on the wrong side of the Tee-Time draw your bet is at a significant disadvantage. Weather matters and working through what wave, if any, has an advantage for each tournament is critical.

We recommend two free weather sources namely Wunderground and Windfinder for global events, and Met Office and Met Éireann for UK/Ireland events.

In addition, here are the specific weather stations we use for The Masters Tournament:

Naturally you can access, source plus save specific stations across all tournaments across Major Championships, PGA Tour and DP World Tour stop-offs.

Step 5 – Make Your Selections

Once you have been through these steps, it’s time to make your selections. Don’t forget – and stating the obvious – your bets will need to be placed prior to the first tee shot of the tournament you are betting upon. We would recommend both bet365 and Spreadex for First Round Leader bets, as we have already detailed.

Once you’ve placed your bets, it’s always good to make a record of when they are teeing off as it’s exciting and entertaining to track your First Round Leader selections within the tournament leaderboard.

Best of luck and hope you enjoyed our Golf First Round Leader Guide!
