The DP World Tour returns this week after a short break, with the players first heading to Kenya before venturing to South Africa for a fortnight of co-sanctioned Sunshine Tour events, then of course focus switches to Augusta National and The Masters.

First things first though and the Magical Kenya Open sees its fourth renewal following its promotion to the main Tour in 2019, having previously been an early-season fixture on the Challenge Tour. Guido Migliozzi won the 2019 edition, with Justin Harding taking the title in 2021 after Covid prevented the 2020 renewal from happening; there was also the Kenya Savannah Classic in 2021, played the week after Harding’s victory, however that and the previously mentioned events were all hosted at Karen Country Club and should be considered accordingly.

Last year’s event moved from the south-west of Nairobi to the north-east and Muthaiga Golf Club, where Ashun Wu proved victorious with a dominant 4-stroke victory. One of the pioneering courses in Kenya with its roots all the way back to the early 1900s, Muthaiga has hosted the Kenya Open on many occasions in the past with the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam and Ken Brown on the long list of winners here.

Robert MacIntyre heads this week’s field at 14/1 from the likes of Antoine Rozner, Oliver Bekker and Adri Arnaus, with defending champion Ashun Wu following closely behind. With The PLAYERS Championship taking centre stage over at TPC Sawgrass – you can read Steve Bamford’s preview for that event here – the field strength understandably leaves a lot to be desired.

Course Overview. Situated to the north-east of Nairobi, Muthaiga is a 7,228 yard, par 71 parkland layout that dates back to 1926. Peter Matkovich completed a renovation of the track in 2004 which brought the club up to (relatively) modern standards, and from what we saw last year looks pretty impressive as it attempts to justify its ‘Home of Golf’ claim.

5 par-3s and 4 par-5s explains the par 71 description and the front 9 plays considerably longer than the back, with over 400 yards the difference between the two halves. Lakes, ponds and trees present problems for those who are flagrant from off the tee, whilst the club claims to have the fastest greens in East Africa which were laid using Bentgrass as part of Matkovich’s work.

Even going back to the 1960s and 70s, the scoring here at Muthaiga hasn’t tended to get out of control, with -10 to -12 generally a competitive score. Aaron Rai’s winning total of -17 in 2017 was among the lowest totals recorded here, and I suspect that whenever it’s firm underfoot it will present a challenge to the professionals.

Nairobi sits at around 5,000 feet above sea level so the altitude here at Muthaiga also helps the ball fly further, much as it did at the previous venue, Karen Country Club.

Tournament Stats. We’ve published some key player statistics for this week’s Magical Kenya Open that will help to shape a view on players who traditionally play well at this event, on both the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour.

For reference, Muthaiga GC hosted the Kenya Open on the Challenge Tour from 2009-12, 2017-18, and last year in 2022 only in this week’s data: Current Form | Tournament Form | First Round Leader Stats | Combined Stats.

Predictor Model. Our published Predictor Model is available here. As always you can build your own model using the variables available.

Magical Kenya Open Winners: 2022: Ashun Wu, 60/1; 2021: Justin Harding 33/1; 2019: Guido Migliozzi, 300/1.

Course Winners (Challenge Tour). 2018, Lorenzo Gagli (-11); 2017, Aaron Rai (-17); 2012, Seve Benson (-10); 2011, Michiel Bothma (-14); 2010, Robert Dinwiddie (-12); 2009, Gary Boyd (-13).

Weather Forecast. The latest weather forecast for Nairobi is here.

The tournament should enjoy warm (mid-80s Fahrenheit) and dry conditions throughout the 4 days. The breeze picks up a little in the afternoons, and is likely to be noticeable at 10-20mph at times.

Tournament Trends & Key Factors. In terms of raw player statistics at Muthaiga, we only have last year’s event to go on:

  • 1st: Ashun Wu (-16). 324 yards (63rd), 57.7% fairways (28th), 70.8% greens in regulation (23rd), 66.7% scrambling (14th), 1.62 putts per GIR (1st).
  • 2nd: Aaron Cockerill (-12). 338 yards (29th), 69.2% fairways (6th), 66.7% greens in regulation (49th), 58.3% scrambling (40th), 1.66 putts per GIR (3rd).
  • 2nd: Thriston Lawrence (-12). 328 yards (53rd), 42.3% fairways (67th), 77.8% greens in regulation (2nd), 43.8% scrambling (68th), 1.76 putts per GIR (24th).
  • 2nd: Hurly Long (-12). 325 yards (56th), 40.4% fairways (71st), 70.9% greens in regulation (20th), 61.9% scrambling (28th), 1.71 putts per GIR (9th).
  • 5th: David Horsey (-11). 326 yards (55th), 59.6% fairways (23rd), 75% greens in regulation (9th), 72.2% scrambling (7th), 1.77 putts per GIR (28th).

With the altitude here, all players were averaging well in excess of 300 yards off the tee and those players who finished in the leading positions were by no means the longest players on the week, suggesting that driving distance isn’t a major factor here.

GIR was fairly consistent between most players, regardless of how they fared from off the tee, meaning that the event was won and lost on and around the greens with eventual winner Ashun Wu topping the putting statistic on the week.

Strokes Gained: From a Strokes Gained perspective, the same top 5 finishers ranked as follows:

  • 1st: Ashun Wu: T: 62nd; A: 4th 3; T2G: 4th; ATG: 28th; P: 4th
  • 2nd: Aaron Cockerill: T: 22nd; A: 31st; T2G: 51st; ATG: 72nd; P: 1st
  • 2nd: Thriston Lawrence: T: 5th; A: 21st; T2G: 6th; ATG: 53rd; P: 22nd
  • 2nd: Hurly Long: T: 14th; A: 45th; T2G: 9th; ATG: 7th; P: 16th
  • 5th: David Horsey: T: 33rd; A: 9th; T2G: 14th; ATG: 47th; P: 23rd

Key: T: SG Off the Tee; A; SG Approach; T2G: SG Tee to Green; ATG: SG Around the Green; P: SG Putting.

Putting is also highlighted in the SG stats for Ashun Wu, however his 4-stroke victory was also fuelled by impressive SG Approach and SG Tee to Green rankings.

Incoming Form. The incoming form of the last 7 winners here at Muthaiga is as follows:

  • 2022, Ashun Wu: 40/45/16/MC/32/MC/MC/16/12/30/MC/42
  • 2018, Lorenzo Gagli: MC/6/31/26/MC/19/MC/MC/MC/MC/34/29
  • 2017, Aaron Rai: 8/20/10/57/26/58/13/19/34/45/MC/7
  • 2012, Seve Benson: MC/16/62/MC/30/MC/MC/20/MC/MC/9/62
  • 2011, Michiel Bothma: MC/MC/50/MC/MC/MC/MC/65/23/48/MC/15
  • 2010, Robert Dinwiddie: MC/MC/32/MC/MC/70/MC/33/MC/MC/44/5
  • 2009, Gary Boyd: MC/MC/6/24/MC/MC/MC/MC/63/MC/40/23

Last year’s winner Ashun Wu had some fairly solid if unspectacular results in his recent past before winning here, with a 12th place finish at the high-class Abu Dhabi Championship to start his 2022 campaign the highlight. 42nd on his previous start 3 weeks before didn’t give many clues, although he did close with his best round of the week, a 68.

In relatively recent times prior to that, Lorenzo Gagli had produced 2 good rounds from 4 at the Tshwane Open and Qatar Master on his last 2 starts at a higher level; similarly Aaron Rai had finished 7th at the Joburg Open on his previous start, before dropping down a level to win.

For completeness, since the Kenya Open joined the main Tour, the incoming form of the winners – including the Kenya Savannah Classic – is as follows:

  • 2021, Daniel Van Tonder: 1/10/1/1/28/1/76/39/MC/71/2/MC
  • 2021, Justin Harding: MC/11/MC/MC/30/38/MC/48/62/27/41/MC
  • 2019, Guido Migliozzi: MC/MC/MC/MC/1/MC/MC/56/MC/MC/63/MC

Of course these results are from Karen Country Club and should be considered accordingly.

For me, players with a preference for short courses and/or those with altitude impacting the ball flight is a positive; likewise those who have shown an ability to perform on quicker Bentgrass greens in the past should enjoy this setup.

My selections are as follows:

Antoine Rozner 3pts EW 18/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Having backed Antoine Rozner on his last start in Thailand where he finished in a tie for 5th, I’m going to have to keep the faith again this week in a similar level field.

Robert MacIntyre rates as the bookies’ favourite this week at around 14/1, however Bob’s hardly been setting the world on fire this year with form of 20/39/MC/57/37 and nursing a putter that’s been stone cold for a few months now.

Rozner, on the other hand, has shown some fantastic flashes of form in the recent past, none more so than in Mauritius in December where he completed a 5-stroke victory to make it a hat-trick of career titles at DP World Tour level.

2nd for SG Approach, 3rd for SG Tee to Green and 1st for SG Putting is a lethal combination on any track, let alone against a poor field in Mauritius, and anything approaching a repeat performance is likely to see the 30 year-old seriously challenge for a quick-fire fourth title, given the correlation between those stats and those that Ashun Wu produced here 12 months ago on his way to a similarly impressive victory.

6th at the Singapore Classic last month showed a more balanced performance with SG Off the Tee the highlight; the putter warmed up again for that aforementioned 5th place finish in Thailand with a SG Putting rank of 8th in the field catching the attention.

34th here last year came in a period when he was performing way below his current levels – 39/MC/47/MC were his 4 previous starts – and the putter back then showed very few signs of life compared to the current day. The man to beat in my view. RESULT: MC

Adri Arnaus 1.5pts EW 33/1 (6EW, 1/5) with Unibet

Perhaps the biggest challenge to Rozner this week will come from Adri Arnaus who’s shown more than once that he enjoys these short, altitude tracks in Kenya.

2nd at Karen Country Club back in 2019 when still searching for his breakthrough victory at DP World Tour level, the putts wouldn’t quite drop on the Sunday as he saw playing partner Guido Migliozzi edge him out by a single stroke from a tie for the 54-hole lead.

8th here at Muthaiga last year is of course more tangible form, although Karen CC isn’t a million miles away and shares a number of characteristics with this week’s test, and again that effort 12 months ago could again have been better still were it not for a flat round of 71 on Saturday which effectively took him out of the reckoning. A closing 66 was positive though and he followed that up with another near miss the following week at Pecanwood, losing out to Pablo Larrazabal in a 3-man play-off.

It was third time lucky though a couple of months later when the Barcelona man won the Catalunya Championship in a play-off over Oliver Bekker, finally exorcising the demons from that Pecanwood play-off loss as well as the extra-time defeat to Rafa Cabrera-Bello at the Spanish Open the year before.

Much has been said about the 28 year-old’s transition from strong ball-striker and poor putter to the polar opposite over the recent past, however there’s enough evidence to suggest that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive for Adri and any week he puts it all together at this level will see him go very, very close.

13th at the Dubai Desert Classic at Rolex Series level in January saw Arnaus rank 2nd for SG Putting on the week; 7 days later he finished 6th at Ras al Khaimah with 7th place rankings for both SG Approach and SG Tee to Green catching the eye. Rested since after missing the cut in Singapore, Arnaus may well have targeted this event specifically for his next big effort as he looks to improve on his OWGR ranking of 86th with Major season fast approaching. Jayden Trey Schaper 1pt EW 50/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

The danger of looking at last year’s Kenya Open here at Muthaiga in isolation, which is the only event where any player statistics have been captured at all, let alone for Strokes Gained enthusiasts, is that it could lead us down a certain – and potentially incorrect – path.

Ashun Wu’s win here should be contrasted by the previous successes of Lorenzo Gagli (2018) and Aaron Rai (2017) whose games differ quite markedly to the defending champion.

Rai as we know is a metronomic sort who plies his trade courtesy of his tee-to-green game without being long from off the tee. Gagli, when he’s playing well, is of a similar style: 6th and 1st for Driving Accuracy combined with 1st and 7th for GIR on his 2 events immediately before winning here tells us that he was in a purple patch of long-game form heading into this event 5 years ago on the Challenge Tour.

Perhaps the closest fit to that pair in this week’s field is Jayden Schaper who’s the sort who pounds fairways and greens with regularity, a strength which may be magnified this week with a dry and at times breezy forecast.

6th for Driving Accuracy and 9th for GIR for the DP World Tour season to date sounds very Aaron Rai-esque to me, and a cursory look at his Sunshine Tour efforts since hitting both Tours reinforces the fact that this is how he plies his trade.

Of course, with players of this ilk the trade-off is inevitably with the putter otherwise they’d be superstars, and the young South African – who celebrates his 22nd birthday next week – can undoubtedly let a few shots go on the greens. A return to more familiar Bentgrass surfaces should help in that respect though as he looks to build on promising form of 17th at the Thailand Classic and 13th at the Indian Open on his last 2 starts.

A play-off defeat at the Sunshine Tour’s Fortress Invitational in October is the closest that Jayden has come to breaking his professional maiden, however this well-regarded youngster also finished 2nd to Christiaan Bezuidenhout at Leopard Creek in 2020 and 6th at the SA Open on just his third outing at this level earlier that year, suggesting to me that he’s well capable to getting over the line in this kind of company. Marcus Kinhult 1pt EW 50/1 (6EW, 1/5) with Unibet

I backed Marcus Kinhult here last year on the strength of a spark of form on the Nordic circuit before heading to Kenya, and he went on to finish 8th here and 3rd on his next start at the Qatar Masters.

9th and 1st in back-to-back events 12 months ago as the Nordic Golf League ventured to Spain 12 months ago clearly got his game back on track after a slow start to his season, and 11th and 8th again on Spanish soil last week may well see him peak for this week at an admittedly higher grade.

Not that performing at DP World Tour level should remotely bother the talented Swede who bagged the British Masters at Hillside in 2019, holding off the high-profile trio of Eddie Pepperell, Matt Wallace and Robert Macintyre into the bargain. That form alone should be enough to shortlist the 26 year-old in this level of field; add into that recent enough top 10s at Valderrama (6th after an opening round of 76) and at the Dubai Desert Classic (8th at Rolex Series level) and perhaps we should be seeing Marcus a little higher up the betting board this week.

Although we can’t delve into Kinhult’s stats from those recent Nordic events, when he’s played his best golf in the past it’s tended to coincide with an up-tick in his long game performance. 8th for Driving Accuracy and 12th for GIR when winning at Hillside is a case in point and he produced similar metrics when recording competitive totals at Le Golf National (11th – 2019) and Wentworth (10th – 2020).

2nd at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in 2019 was the closest that Marcus came to adding a second trophy to his cabinet at this level, ultimately he was thwarted in a play-off by Tommy Fleetwood, however that’s good altitude form on a longer but comparable layout in South Africa.

12th here at Muthaiga in 2017 came after an opening 72; only 2 players beat his final 54-hole tally from there and of course we can add last year’s improvement on this track to the argument for this year’s renewal. RESULT: T65

Angel Hidalgo Portillo 1pt EW 90/1 (8EW, 1/5*) with bet365

Finally, another player to catch the eye in recent times who’s already hinted at an aptitude to play this course in Nairobi is Angel Hidalgo.

This time last year the 24 year-old arrived here with just a handful of DP World Tour level starts to his name, having spent his first 3 years on the Alps Tour, where he won twice, and the Challenge Tour, where we won the German Challenge the previous September.

5th to halfway here at Muthaiga after an opening pair of 68s, the weekend saw him fall back to a tie for 17th, however that was no disgrace and the Spaniard went on to improve on that with a 15th place finish at the Soudal Open, 8th at the Cazoo Classic and 4th at Valderrama where he shot a 2nd round 63 to lead at the halfway point. All 3 are relatively short tracks with bentgrass-based putting surfaces to hint that this kind of test might be the best fit for the Spaniard.

8th at the Dubai Desert Classic and 10th last time out at the Indian Open were both driven by a hot putter on less familiar agronomy to suggest that Angel’s game is in great shape right now, and any further improvement this week could see each-way backers rewarded with a place payout or potentially better.
