Paul Williams' tips for the 2010 Iberdrola Open
Back to Spain this week to the island of Majorca, an island I've visited a number of times and still have only the vaguest of recollections. This is the first edition of this particular event so once again we have no specific tournament form to study, however there is some assistance this week as the Jose-Maria Olazabal designed Pula Golf Club has hosted the Mallorca Classic 5 times between 2003-2007 with Miguel Angel Jiminez, Sergio Garcia, Olazabel himself, Nicolas Fasth and Gregory Bourdy comprising the 5 winners. I've included the results from these 5 tournaments in the predictor to help you with your selections, although it's worth noting that the Mallorca Classic was played in October when conditions would have been quite different after a mediterranean summer
Pula GC is a short (6,808 yards) par 70 with just 2 par 5s and 5 of the par 4s under 400 yards. You'll recall that we've just visited another Olazabel-designed course in Seville where Alvaro Quiros triumphed - the results for this tournament are 'Last But 1 Tournament' in the predictor and may well be of relevance here. The course is a tight, tree-lined challenge with water in play on a number of the holes. With good conditions a score of 10 under par or better will be required to be in contention come Sunday afternoon, however with a breeze and a bit of wet weather expected you can expect to see a much smaller number of players finishing in red numbers for the week.
There's not a massive amount to go on this week so I've been reasonably conservative with my tips. Based on the predictor output, here are my recommendations for the week:
Robert Jan-Derksen 2pts Win 20/1 RESULT: T27
The Dutchman hasn't won since 2005 but in this field he stands an excellent chance. Has an excellent record at Pula GC with form of 11/8/3 in the last 3 Mallorca Classic events and must be seriously considered here. Finished 12th in Andalucia, 6th in Korea and then 17th in Seville before taking a rest last week. Must go very close this week.
Alejandro Canizares 2pts Top 5 finish 7/2 RESULT: 2nd, lost in playoff
A bit like a cracked record with Canizares, however his recent form and season-long statistics speak for themselves. My fear is that he'll now get increasingly used to being in contention without winning, hence the top-5 selection this week - however with Extrabet's promise to pay ties in full this price is very attractive indeed.
Jose Manuel Lara 2pts Win 33/1 RESULT: T16
Jose Manuel Lara 4pts Top 10 finish 3/1 RESULT: T16
Lara absolutely loves this track - his 5 cracks at the Mallorca Classic produced form of 10/11/2/3/7 which is head and shoulders above the field. But for an opening round 76 last week could well have walked away with the title. You'll get a much lower price if you want to go EW on Lara, however 33/1 on the nose is unmissable, as is 3/1 for a top 10!
